Well, I am officially in the market for some tuner lug nuts and wanted to see what some of you guys were runnning and what some of you guys recommend. I am also looking for something that comes with a key (to keep those pesky thievs off) or sold separately, doesnt matter. Also, looking for something that doesnt rust or warp (like stainless steel, etc).
Thanks.
P.S I did a search, and it seems the Muteki set might be a viable choice. But, I would rather also ask what people are running and recommend and also, I have not a clue on what to look for when it comes to these darn things :hmm:. Also, what are spline drive lugs and whats not??
I’ve run 2 tuner lugnuts so far: McGard Gorilla Spline Drive tuner lugs and Rays Lugs. Spline drive uses an adapter that fits over the lug, that you turn with your socket.
Gorillas: They are shiny chrome, fairly heavy, but durable and work very well. They are also cheap, (depending on where you’re buying them) and easy to replace, since tire shops have them loose.
Rays: these lugs are very lightweight and they are of course, bling. they come with 2 “keys”, one for the regular lugs, and another for the “slotted” lugs (of which there are 4, and are like locks). the problem with these lugs is that they bind to the keys/sockets when you put enough torque on them (aka, use an impact wrench, or any sort of wrench) and require some jiggling to get the lug free from the key/socket. keep in mind this is happening when the lugs are brand new–i don’t know what’s going to happen in 100,000 miles when the edges of the lugs are worn down. I’m pretty disappointed in these things. Also, i just dropped a lug on the road (even though i torqued them to spec) and now need to replace one. not sure where i can buy just 1 black long rays lug. They do look really good, however. and did i mention that they’re really light?
the gorillas cost me about 20 bucks. the rays cost me $90. go figure, huh?
i got my lugs from the wheel shop i worked at…close ended chrome lugs…conical seat…
if you can use regular close ended lugs instead of “tuner” lugs, i recemend that. the open ended “tuner” lugs suck because they rust and are more prone to being mis-threaded and breaking studs…
these are no name lugs and i cant justify spending $90 on lugnuts no matter how light they are and they are no less prone to mis-threading than $20 lugs(which is %100 user error in the first place)…they are just lug nuts…
so if you can, use regular lugs instead of tuner lugs…but if your wheels wont allow it, be extra careful when putting your wheels on
this is a “tuner lug” that im talking about
this is the style of lug im using, w/ locks of course
So would you recommend any type of brand per sey?? Or atleast the material make up?? I need something that wont rust (not only closed ended, but material make-up, like those shiney bad boys) and strong, and WHEEL LOCK!. I mean, I could go go pepboys and get a set tomorrow for almost nothing, but is it worth it?? And it seems my wheels dont need tuner lug nuts. I will try em on tomorrow and see what comes of it.
And I personally agree with the 90-130 lug statement. The only thing they are good for is bringing in thieves. Not Good. And the weight is not even noticable.
So whadda think, a nice set from pepboys would be nice, or something along those lines??
Thanks.
i got zenki lug nuts… dunno if you ever heard of those… super light weight… feels like you are holding nothing… alright the only thing that is wrong is its purple redish… then it fades into a pink… looks gay but its alrite!
go to pep boys w/ your wheels and ask them to get some lug nuts for them…ask if they have stainless steel lug nuts…
all im saying is that it is okay to go and get generic parts sometimes…i think lug nuts are one of them…theres no need to get “reviews” for lugnuts…
id say pep boys arent going to give you lug nuts that are going to fall off your wheels…and you can get a set of locks too…its 4 lugs that need a special socket…
what color wheels do you have?? you could always paint them, if you cant find your color, but it will probably chip off when you change wheels…
