Recovering headliner - Anyone Done This?

I am looking into recovering the headliner to do the tan to black interior conversion on a project car. I have a donor car, but it doesn’t have a sunroof.

Couple questions:

What type of glue was used?

Did you remove the stock vinyl like material?

What fabric did you use?

I want to use either a “tweed” like material or a suede like material or I may even try black vinyl. I have done some interior work before with 3m super 77 glue and contact cement, it worked pretty well, just not sure how either will work on a headliner.

Post pics if you got them!

I wrapped my head liner with white vinyl on my old DA. I just used contact cement and it held up there without a problem for at least 2 years. The car was written off after an accident so I dont know how long it would have lasted but 2 years both winter and summers was good enough for me. I just cleaned the stock vinyl on the head liner and stuck it right to that.

Sorry never took any pics of the head liner.

Great, thanks alot.

3M makes a great spray on adheasive. I usualy use it for sandpaper disks, but i always thought about using it on the door pannels for the carpet and inserts. Im sure it would work just as well on the headliner.

Post up some pictures when you are all done. I for one would love to see how it turns out.
