Hello Jonathan,

Good work finding the part and numbers! Question on the original removal of the evaporator, did you need to pull the front console to remove the evaporator or can you get it out with out removing the console and knee bolster? Yes, the Helms says they must come out but we all know they some times over dis assemble to make the job easier.
Thanks!

Good point Marc, to install the heater duct you do not have to remove the metal knee bolster. HOWEVER, to remove the evaporator you HAVE TO remove the metal knee bolster, and to get the knee bolster out you have to remove the center console first. Unfortunately, this is a lot of work but IS necessary to get the evaporator out.

I forgot this detail because I had the evaporator out for a good two months before I installed the heater duct, so thanks for reminding me.

Thanks for the info Jonathan,

I have the rest of my A/C out except the wiring and evaporator not looking forward to disassembling the lower dash to remove it. Just thought I might as well do it all at one time and replace the evaporator with the correct heater ducting.
Thanks Again!

Marc,

Do you have a metal knee bolster? To date, I have only found them on U.S. DAs and not on ours as of yet. You may be able to get at it without removing the consol yet!

Actually, to get the knee bolster out, you don’t need to remove the console. it’s held in by 2 bolts on each side iirc… You just have to reach your arm up in there to get the bolts out by the console, but it’s not that hard. Marc, I’m suprised you still have those heavy metal pieces in your car. tsk tsk. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the only purpose those knee bolsters serve is to absorb energy in case of an accident. If you look at the bars that connect the entire metal plate to its mounting points they are shaped like a Sine curve, which allows them to crumple in an accident. I would think that the seatbelt would keep you from sliding that far to have have your knees hit the metal bolster.

I have seriously thought about permanently removing mine anyhow because they weigh alot and would be removing weight from the front of the car which is where we have the more weight.

You may be able to get at the knee bolster without removing the plastic center console but the last time I looked at it, it didn’t seem possible. Sorry I’m having trouble remembering all of this but it has been a good month since I installed the heater duct, and a good 3 months since I took out the A/C (and my car was in so many pieces at the time, it’s hard to remember what was attached to my car.)

Also, check out section 22.22 for a complete removal how-to in your Helm’s manual for removing the evaporator. It is really straight forward.

Hey Marc,

While we’re on the topic what did you choose to do with the condensor fan. The way I see it there are a couple options:

 1. Leave it in, and wire it in parallel with the main radiator fan.
 2. Leave it in, and use a remote switch so you can turn it on for race days.
 3. Take it out, you don’t need the extra cooling.
 4. Take both fans out, and put in lighter, more efficient, thinner TFAL unit(s).

Or, I can’t even remember if you have an aluminum radiator, in which case you’d probably choose number 4. Just curious because I’m tempted to wire mine to a remote switch with a relay. Right now it is sitting in a box in my room.

Hello Jonathan,

I just pulled the A/C condenser fan and relays, have not removed the wiring for it yet. I thought about keeping the fan also but decided I just don’t need it at present.

I still have the original Aluminum radiator and my engine runs to cool with the stock oil cooler, Moroso oil pan, larger oil filter and Dex Cool in the radiator I have created a problem. No it’s not the thermostat! My cooling fan has never come on, ever. I was concerned and tested it manually to make sure the circuits and fan were operational, does work just never needed. I can drive less than 2 minutes on the highway and my temp gauge bottoms out, no VTEC and ECM low temperature readings induce limited RPM.

Hey Ive,

I think you are correct I stuck my head up under the dash looking for that knee bolster to remove one time but couldn’t find one. Haven’t been there since but when I pull the evaporator I will find out for sure. I’m going to bring the pulley to the up coming meet!
