My alternator went out and i looked all over the place for a way to get it out. From the engine bay it looks impossable but me and my grandpa found a great way to get it out. I don’t know if anyone else has done it this but some people went to great lengths to get there’s out that was a waste of time. This is a rough outline so if u have questions let me know, i’ll be happy to answer them.
First, remove the ground wire at the top of the alternator, attatched by a hex nut. Then unplug the green plug on the left side. Make sure u put those out of the way.
Second, there’s two main bolts holding the alternator in, the tension bolt which can be reached from the top of the engine bay, the visable one. Then the other one which u need to get under the car, easy if u use ramps. It makes it alot easier if u remove the black plastic guard from around the wheel well on the driver side.
Third, Once u get the alternator free from everything let it sit there. Now looking under the car there is a slot right above the axle, that is the biggest slot or opening, so it should be noticeable. Get an oil pan and remove the oil filter, now the axle which is going from one wheel to other, the axle is going right through the bracket, the bracket is right where the opening is, held in by 3 bolts, it looks like it’s holding the axle up, take off the 3 bolts and rotate the bracket around towards u. Now just try different variations of where the alternator is postioned, and it will come out with a little pressure.
There u have it, if u have any questions feel free to ask, i just told u the main parts, i thought this was a lot easier then taking it a garage and paying for parts and labor, and just to let u know the cheapest alternator i found was 179 bucks with core charge so another 150 to 200 or more for labor, i didn’t want to pay. Also better than pulling the axle out or whatever. Ask whatever u want.
i tried this off other forums and unbolted the bracket. i couldnt flip it down so i ended up changing my oil and taking it out by removing the brake master cylinder. are the cars slightly different. i have a 90 ls
Meh, I’ve done my axles so many times, that taknig out the axle is like a 30 minute jobby so I jsut tackle it that way. luckily I haven’t had to repalce one yet, as everytime I have my engine out I use a diff one anyways but ya. hehe Remember to recheck the belt tension, I find mines even with the stock honda locking bolts/nuts it backs off for the first week, after retorquing it holds.
Hey I know this is old but it does work  and i wanted to thank the dude that first started this… but i didnt have to remove the oil filter for it to work just took some wigglin to get the alt out only reason i didnt remove the axle is bc me and my buddy couldnt get it to budge when my alt first went i ended up payin 300+ at a shop for them todo it this time i paid only 150 for this and it turned out to be alot easier then i thought…so thanx dude
Yo! mattyg2, do you also have a 90 teggy or different year? anyways my battery and alternator were tested at autozone the guy said my battery was good but the only problem was that it had a low charge. then he turned the car on and had me raise the rpm’s to 2k and hold it. he said the alternator was only pumping out 7amps. ( I had my stereo on which consists of two amps, my fog lights, my fan on low, and bumper lights cuz their rewired, oh and my radiator fans always run.) He said i needed a new alternator ASAP.
I’ve been driving around for a week now without any accesories on (nothing as a matter a fact) and the car starts perfectly so far. Is it just a matter of time before it my alternator gives? And can my alternator still be able to charge my battery with such a low amperage?
It well, definitely come out the bottom, even without taking the filter off. the best thing to do is use a prybar between the crossmember and the “t” barcket. This will push ther mnotor forward just enough for it to slip out of there.
Learned that late night saving some stranded fine ass girl
meanwhile (i was stranded in an exxon parkin lot late at night) josh was gruntin underneath my car- i was eatin beef jerky and feedin this little homeless kitten some water outta the ‘cuppy thing’ on the jack (yall know what i mean)
it was a good time. i had fun. he didnt so much. in the end, he made a ridiculous mess out of the bathroom at exxon with his disgusting hands and ruined my navy soccer camp tshirt that i suffered a whole WEEK for.
i have a 91 rs i tried pulling the alternator from the bottom this weekend with no success. i ended up pulling the master cylinder and pulling the alternator from the top. not that hard to do. i took my car to get the brakes bleeded for 20 bucks afterward. not a bad deal.
how do u take out the master cylinder, my alt just went out on me tonight and i have the alternator brushes ready to go in but dont know how to take the master cylinder off, please help me!!
No need to pull the line from the brake booster either *master cylinder… All you gotta do is pull is upwards and bend the brake lines with it. They’re pliable enough to bend without breakin. They can be easily bent back once job is done. There is only 3 bolts in the way of that, and successfully changin the alternator out. Good luck!
