Removing hatch glass from hatch?? Help!

I have a smashed gsr hatch with good glass and a good normal hatch with the 3rd brakelight that I want to put the GSR glass into. Does anyone know how to pull the glass out? Thanks

as far as i know and someone point out if im wrong but you take the black trim off around the hatch and use a tool to break the seal around the glass and it should come out…

just found out you can use a guitar string to cut through the seal. That’s what i’ll be doing to get a windshield out of a parts car this weekend. Has to be High E, or or B string though

Has anyone done this before on the hatch?

I’ve been wondering the same actually, the hatch on my GSR is toast but the glass is perfect and I want to keep the smooth lack of third brake light look…

Anyone know what glass places usually charge to do that for you? I don’t want to break anything or chip the glass :|…

i think they charge 50 bucks at local glass shops for puttin in glasses, jsut take off the glasses and clean the glue off and bring to them for installation, i wouldnt do it ur self unless u know how to glue on glass… or its gonna fall offf one day at highway driving…

There are a couple special tools designed for this. The one I’m more familiar w/ has a handle connected to an angled blade. Then connected to that piece is a cable or piece of metal which is connected to another handle.

Example:

Not sure what a shop will charge, but there’s a good chance they will NOT guarantee that the glass will not break. It can be difficult to remove this glass w/o breaking it. Remember, there’s a 1/2"+ bead of extremely tough silicon adhesive holding the glass to the metal and this must be cut.

When I broke the rear glass on my GSR and had to buy a hatch with glass from the wrecking yard (it was cheaper than buying new glass) the installer used what looked like an electric (vibrating) knife to slice the rubber holding the glass to the hatch.
