So I’m a new DA9 owner, first time working on anything like it and I am needing some help on my alternator. I’ve been trying to search around the deep space of the internet for something and I haven’t found anything which is why I am posting here today.
The alternator is seized, my belt broke and I’m trying to remove this one for a new one. The problem is the bottom pivot bolt will not budge. The alternator would not budge until I got a good bit of leverage on it with a crowbar, not it will pivot but the bolt just still won’t come out. There is nothing there to hold it other than this bolt and I don’t know how I’m going to be getting this out.
Any ideas? I’ll try to get some pics uploaded if needed.
have you sprayed the bolt w/ PB Blaster and a ratchet or wrench w/ extra leverage
I had same problem and I just unbolted the alt and bracket then took of the suspension and cv axle and pulled it thru there it was more work but it worked… Good luck
So far I hit it with some WD-40 at first as that was all I had at the time, of course it didn’t help much. Now a couple days later I have this can of some generic liquid wrench and I’ll be testing it out. I can only seem to be able to reach one of the ears that the bolt slips through, which will make this still a bit difficult.
By the way, if I didn’t explain it well enough before, what I am having trouble with is removing the single bolt in the bottom mount that tilts the alternator, the nut is off but the bolt will not move out of the bottom bracket that it slips through.
sounds like the bolt is actually siezed to the alt. itself. I would just keep spraying it and try to geta pry bar inter to press it out. if it still wont slide out, do as gecko1 said. just pull the whole thing out, screw the nut on for a couple threads and give it a good wack with a mallet or hammer. that should free it up for you…
Is there a way to undo the mounting bracket with the alt still on? Because I tried looking at that option before but it just doesn’t look like I could get to one of the bolts holding that part on.
it would be a complete PITA. you have to remove the bolt from inside then just pull the bracket out as you use and open end wrench to get into and back out the one thats behind the alternator.
I would try and wedge a big pry bar between the bolt and chasis frame rail first and see what that gets you.
Alright, for future reference I’m going to post how I got my alternator out, that way others that are having a problem can go by what I did.
First off, the PB blaster didn’t help at all. I blasted and hammered at that bolt for over 5 hours, which means I would have to go for a different route to pull it, by taking out the whole mounting system.
In order to reach the bolt sitting behind the alternator, the hardest bolt to reach I had to take out the upper adjusting bracket for the alternator, it uses two 14mm bolts, they were really rusted in there but some leverage on the handle of my ratchet with a crowbar made breaking it a breeze. The only hard part was actually getting the socket onto the head, I used a 2 1/2" extension with the 14mm socket, I had to pull the wire harness and the power steering? hose out of the way as well as remove the hose mount. This all took about 25-35 mins mostly because it was hard fitting the socket on.
With the two mounting bolts that were reached from under the car out of the way with a bit of leverage I was ready to go for the last mounting bolt through the top of the engine bay. A crowbar is good here in order to shove the alternator towards the firewall as far as possible, as I am already going to replace my alt, I have no problem slamming at it until I was sure it wouldn’t go further. Again the bottom mounting bolts are all 14mm, I had to use the closed end of a wrench in order to undo this bolt, and I had to use the crowbar here as well to get the break. This bolt alone took the good part of an hour to an hour and 30 minutes.
With the way the mounting bracket is designed only the closed end was small enough to fit for most of this time. Once I had it out half of the way I used the open end for a bit faster turning. In the end it just slid down and the top of the alt pinned to the firewall, so no worry about it just dropping. I did have to take out the CV Axle for the alt to come out the rest of the way.
I did try the crowbar against the bay in order to try and pry the bolt out, also tried the same thing and just smacking the crap out of the bar and still nothing. I have yet to bother looking at it today either to see how bad it is seized because it’s cold and raining out so I won’t be able to do anymore for up until Sunday. Thanks all who posted their ideas to try and help out. I hope this will help others in their journey for being a DIYer.
