Replacing AC evaporator

Just got the car back from the shop and my mechanic said the evaporator has a leak and he said it would cost $1200 to fix. He said the entire dash has to be removed to replace it so most of the cost is in labor.
He suggested not to get it fixed but told me he could try one of those AC sealant repair sprays and see how it goes. I drove the car home to cool air, but now it’s a wait and see game if the sealant did the job.
So if the $40 sealant repair didn’t fix my problem does $1200 sound right to replace the evaporator? And does one really need to remove the entire dash to do this?
Anyone have any pics where the evaporator is actually located?

Too bad. I literally threw mine away last week. It’s under the glove compartment. Look up ac removal to see how to access it. It’s not hard but also not super easy. Probably about an hour and half to do. There’s no need to remove the dash. Grab one from a junkyard
