Im reading the helms and have a couple of questions about replacing the clutch:
Do I have to have the clutch alignment shaft, clutch alignment disc, and ring gear holder?
I have been driving w/ my clutch slipping for about 2 weeks now, there is some material on the flywheel that could be worn due to the clutch slipping / can I replace that material or do I have to get a whole new flywheel?
Approx. how heavy is the transmission assembly? (After removing bolts, can I support it down by myself)?
When replacing synchros / do I need a press?
Also, a good place to get the ball joint separator that fits are suspension?
2: depends how bad if the metal rivets scraped into the flywheel you might havta get a new one…depend show bad. But just get it resurfaced that should make it good as new… Plus its recommend to get the resurfaced whenever puttin a new clutch in…only costs around $30
3: The tranny is pretty heavy…i mean im only 145lb s and not to strong…but it was heavy for me…maybe usuing a jack while lowering would be best…
4: I dont know about the syncros…never did them…all i know is they cost a good bit to replace from a shop!
5: ANy ball joint sperator would be good (make sure its the right size) But in my opinion there all the same… try Sears, Advanced Auto, Trax Auto, Pep-Boys, etc…
Try running a search on transmission removal or something like that and filter out any posts from G2Guru. I believe he stated that the tranny weighs approx. 45lbs.
I’m pretty sure our trannies are around 80lbs, they’re definitely not 45lbs. I weighed mine before I put it in, but I forget exactly what it weighed, I wanna say it was something like 87.5lbs. You MIGHT be able to lift the tranny off the engine depending on your size, but I’d put a jack under it with a board to cushion the tranny a bit, and guide it off the engine from up top then gently lower it out of the car with the jack.
Thanks Mike5809. You didn’t need the ring gear holder to keep the flywheel from spinning? Right size? I rented one from auto zone one time and it wouldn’t fit around the metal to so that it could push up, what is the size exactly?
Another ? - I went to autozone and it’s only 64.99 for a new clutch disc - when I asked about an alignment tool - he was trying to sell me a complete set - do different clutch discs need different alignment tools?
Different cars need different alignment tools. You don’t need to bother with a full set unless you think you’ll need it. Just get one that fits for your tranny. What I did to keep the flywheel from spinning while torquing down the bolts was I had a friend put a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt, and I had him hold it there while I tightened the flywheel bolts. Worked fine. You might not even need the friend depending, you may be able to jam a breaker bar against the mount on that side and get it to stay, I dunno. Good luck.
