Replacing struts need help

I will be replacing my blown passenger side rear strut soon, are there any specialty tools i will need to complete the job? All i need is the replacement strut/shock/damper correct?

On another topic i am burning oil like crazy. I have a 1990 RS with about 92,000. I am new to working on cars and would like any trouble shooting tips with details or how to’s. I couldn’t find any leaks in the usual parking spots i use, any suggestions?

Thanks all:cool:

The only specialty tool you’ll need to get the strut in is a spring compressor.

As for the oil prob, are you smoking out the exhaust?

You’ll also need an allen wrench… umm… 4 or 5mm? to hold the strut rod while you remove the nut at the top of the assembly.

it’s not my vehicle it’s my brother’s and i’m helping him out. He’s telling me that he sees no smoke or leaks on his parking spots. I will check this out more thoughly soon, but are there any trouble spots i should look for. Thanks again pros

having a second person to help you with the strut removel is a plus. wd-40 and a breaker bar helps out alot also with the bolts.

for the oil, try replacing the pcv valve. also what type of oil is he using. synthetic or normal? weight of oil?

Check your oil pan seal and oil pump seal(under car, close to driver side front wheel). Oil can leak out there when you are driving but maybe not enough to leave evidence on your driveway. Both will be covered in oil and dirt though. The dirt will keep the oil from dripping and you will have a nice layer of filth built up built up on several places around the leak. Check the cam seal next to the distributor too.

he’s usuing regular weight oil not synthetic, not sure on the grade though.

Good idea about looking for the filth by the oil pan. thanks, keep the ideas coming

Maybe it is just burning oil and not leaking any.
