Replacing the Rotor and Coil

hey guys, ive owned my 2nd gen for about a year. and just recently it wouldnt start. i was having problems about a month ago but it eventually started. now it wont turn over for anything. when i crank it u can smell the gas, so i know my fuel is ok, but when i pulled a wire and plug to test the spark i got nothing…i pulled off the cap and it was filthy, so i cleaned the contacts. next i pulled all the plugs and found that they needed to be gapped really bad…after doing that and putting everything back together it still wont start. the only thing i can think of is the coil. but i cant get the rotor off to get to it. i would appreciate it alot if u guys could tell me how to get the rotor off and the coil out to replace it. and also if there is a way to test the coil without taking everything apart. thanks in advance for everything. lata.

do a search first next time. use a multimeter

i tryed doing a search but couldnt find how to remove the rotor, all the posts that came up just said that they had already replaced it.

to remove the rotor, there is a screw or a hex nut holding the rotor. either turn the crank pulley or just give it a full turn (crank) untill u see the side where the screw/nut is.

there’s a screw on the rotor that goes into the shaft that it’s mounted on. Some are philips, some are hex, and the odd one is something different (depends if it’s OEM or aftermarket). But to see the screw, you have to remove a little plastic cover beside the rotor. It’s just a black cover – squeeze it and pull and it should come off pretty easily. You may have to turn the crank on the engine to get the rotor turned so that you can access the screw easier too. Make SURE you use the correct size screwdriver or you will strip the head and then you gotta take it apart a lot further (lots of people do that).

good luck

thanks guys, hopefully i have this car back up and running before too long.
