Okay, I’ve decided that I’m going back to my 3-piece factory lights, but I’m going to paint the housings black. My question is (and I’ve searched through theads and teg-tips to no avail): what means should I use to reseal the headlights after I paint them? Is it possible to reheat the adhesive on the lights to stick them back together, or would it be better to use something else? I am also curious about this for my taillights, since I’m going to do the sand-down trick later this summer to an extra pair that I have. If this information is somewhere around here and I missed it, then I appologize for setting up what will ultimately become a repost. However, I would greatly appreciate any information that you may have. Thanks in advance.
In for an answer myself, i need to reseal my headlight, and im about to clear out some tails
DON"T reuse the old adhesive, scrape it all off. Its NEVER going to reseal properly.
Get a small tube of 3M windsheild adhesive.
I had a friend of mine that used GM RTV sealant on his Tiburon (fuck Hyundai) and said that it works great. I never even thought of the windshield sealant…that’s a good idea.
alright…im bringing this thread back from the dead
i did an advance search and this thread was the only one given, but im still not satisfied with the responses. so…
im in the process of removing my headlight lens(JDM 1-pieces). my question is…what is the most preventative way to reseal them without having them leak or build-up condensation?
im sure this will help other g2ic members as well
note: as of right now…my headlights are already building-up condensation when it rains or when i wash my car and i am 100% sure it’s leaking from the seals because of the location where it start.
i was thinking about using water proof tape underneath the headlights because that where the condensation seems to be starting, but any other/better suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you want to use an “oem type” of sealant you can use 3M Window Weld or headlight sealant made by nissan. You should be able to find window weld at most auto parts stores, and it should cost less than the nissan sealant. Both of those types of sealant are like a rubber butyl type of material so they need to be heated in the oven before reintalling the headlight lense.
For my projector retrofit, I just reheated the original sealant and stuck the lenses back together. Then I went over the entire edge, and filled in the crack with clear silicone. It seems to work great and it was cheaper and easier than the rubber butyl. The only time I got any condensation was at the car wash. The rain doesn’t make them fog up at all. I’m going to add a little more silicone to the area that allowed the condensation in at the car wash, and then I don’t think I’ll have any more issues.
thankx…i was just looking at the nissan sealant.
I just heat mine in the oven an put some clear sealant in the groove will it was hot an then pressed them together an they were good (did it on my oem fogs)
You probably wouldn’t even need to heat them. That silicone just gets tacky and seals the groove. I don’t think heat would hurt, I just don’t know if it really necessary.
I did the same. Heated them up (this ensures the stock sealant is gooey and wont stop the plastic lens cover from sitting in the housing properly) then added a bead of silicone, pressed them firmly together and used some rubber backed “quick grip” clamps I had to keep them tight together until the silicone dried.
