You’re welcome man, glad I could clear up the confusion a bit. I was unsure how it would arrive when I bought mine but was very pleased to see it already pre-welded together. I sure hope there are still some in stock. Best of luck placing your order.
They’re still available! I just placed my order with Dennis!
Do want!
Great news dude!
I ended up getting mine from hmotorsonline off a JDM front end that was shipped over here. aside from the jdm “vin” tag riveted holes it was super straight and exactly like ours over here.
would you happen to know the drawbacks of stripping out the seam sealer and just leaving it like that. no spot welding or seam sealing back together? just a simple cleaning of the area and priming before paint? I couldn’t find much on this but that is how I am planning on doing mine and wasn’t sure of proven long term affects.
Well the seam sealer is there to prevent water from sitting between the metal and causing rust. I’m not sure how serious of a risk it is or how long it would take for an issue to arise leaving it out. If you could get a good layer of protection from your primer and paint I assume it would be good for a long time. I think it would be difficult to get good penetration into some of the seams though due to them being in tight corners and not having a good angle to spray them from.
I would definitely weld or use seam sealer. Personally I think it looks better that way anyway.
I agree. Any particular reason you don’t want to weld them?
honestly I think the raw seams look better than with the seam sealer. different strokes I guess
(don’t mean to thread jack) this is what my bay looks like at the moment with the seam sealer stripped:
sorry for the crappy pics but my car is a city away and I work 10 hour days so these were what I had on my phone and not actually decent shots.
If you like the look better than by all means do what you like. It’s your car and other people’s opinions don’t really matter. You want to be happy with the way it comes out.
I would suggest maybe filling in the deep cracks slightly at least though so the paint doesn’t have such a hard time filling them up all the way and risk possibly exposing an area to the elements if you don’t get 100% perfect paint coverage. I doubt it would look very different but the peace of mind would make it worth the effort to me. Just my .02
yeah there are a few sections where its triple layered with metal and I was thinking that the paint and primer would have a hard time staying together in those areas so I did seam seal those spots but I really worked it after it dried with a dremel to keep that metal on metal look.
Right on. As long as its sealed well you shouldn’t have any problems. Is this car going to be daily driven and see harsh weather and rain? If not then I wouldn’t worry about it at all.
No. It’ll be a garage car.
^Then I think you should be fine. Just make sure that you get good coverage on your paint.
So I broke down and bought an air compressor today because I need air tools. Just a cheap $200 harbor freight unit but its enough for what I need.
Since I finally have a welder and air tools I decided to start shaving the seams.
I barely made any progress and my welder died. It still feeds wire and I can hear the gas but it won’t make an arc anymore. I’m so bummed. I just bought it and it already took a shit. With Christmas coming I’m not going to be able to afford a replacement for a while so progress stops, sigh.
The one seam I got to start on before it died…
FedEx brought me a present today! That puta a little wind back in my sails but I still don’t know what I’m gonna do about a welder. I’m thinking about just picking up a brand new miller…
That’s a bummer about the welder Too bad it’s not newer with instructions, maybe it’s an easy fix, just something minor which is making it malfunction?
It actually was! The switch inside the gun lost its connection and wasn’t quite allowing it to make contact. I got that fixed and started it back up, but now its cutting in and out on the wire feed motor during welding. When its not welding wire will feed smoothly but as soon as you start welding with it it just sputters and gives out really shitty welds. I’m going to get inside of it later this week and clean and check the connections for the wire feed motor. I really need to just give it a complete overhaul. The gun is in rough shape and the ground is in terrible shape. I want to replace them both but I want to make sure I can resolve the cutting out issue first so I’m not throwing money at a welder that will need replacing anyway.
I have welded before and although I’m not an expert I’ve never had such a hard time dialing in a piece of equipment before. I’m far from satisfied with this machines capabilities but before I completely right it off as a loss I need to spend some time getting it operating as well as possible. I really wish it had more voltage control at least. Only having 4 settings for voltage makes it a bit harder to dial in then anything I’ve used in the past.
Look like your making lots of good progress on this Micheal. I set a reminder in my phone to get that shipping quote tomorrow
That is indeed one of the bigger issues with less expensive machines, a LOT less voltage and temp control.
Not that I weld at all… My brother handles all that lol. The recent welder he acquired has a lot more adjustability and it has helped immensely.
Also as you mentioned, gas would be a great addition… provided you get the short-issue solved.
Sounds good glynn! Just shoot me a text or call when you find out what the damage is gonna be.
Sean-Yeah I’ve been kinda kicking myself for going cheap on it but it is doing the job for me. Definitely a bit temperamental but I’m starting to get it figured out. Basically cleaning the connections that attatch to the wire feed motor and switch and the voltage adjustment switches didn’t really help but I found that when it starts acting up if I switch it to a different voltage setting and then back it stops temporarily. So I’ve at least narrowed it down to what the source of the problem is.
It really would benefit from a new ground, gun, and liner. Those are on my list of things to replace in the near future. I’ve actually been using gas the whole time since I’ve had my tank filled.
I’ve been in the garage all afternoon so expect an update tonight!
