running really bad

My teg is sick :frowning:
When i start it, i have to keep on the gas to keep the engine running, it blows a little grey smoke, which smells like gas. It’s also very slow to rev, backfires at low rpm. in general runs like crap.

What ive tried so far.
…Replaced the coil, distrubruter cap, rotor, it helped out some, but it’s still not driveable
…I dont have a timing light at my house, so i tried moving the distribruter one way and then another, didnt help very much.

any comments/suggestions?

did your header fall off?

sounds like trouble. go pickup a haynes at pep boys and go through the troubleshooter. also search the archive section for the link to download the helms manual

Have you checked:

  • Spark Plugs
  • Spark Plug wires
  • Fuel filter
  • Air filter
  • PCV valve
  • O2 sensor

How much mileage in the car? When was the last time the timing belt was changed? Who did the the timing belt change? When was the last time a valve adjustment was done?

Regards,

Oz

That is a good place to start out. If nothing changes after going through that list then you should really get a timing light and check your timing. From what you are saying, it sounds like the timing is off. Maybe your belt slippd a tooth…
A compression test would tell you a lot too.

I looked at the spark plugs, they are still in like new condition except being covered in black sooty stuff. I tried turning the distribruter this way and that, but it didnt help out at all.

tonight i pulled the crank pulley off and it’s not the timing belt, everything lines up fine there.

Is the timing belt tight?? Did you make sure that the crank AND the cams were at TDC when you checked them??
Why did you pull the crank pulley to inspect the timing belt??

Everything looks good with the timing belt, I found out one cylinder isnt firing. Typical of me, I always look past the really simple solution and go on to really complicated stuff. Hopefully tommorow I can figure out how to get the sparkplug out, it was so tight that I couldnt take it out by hand.
