I just got back from doing my emmisions test and I failed. I passed 3 out of the 4 test, I had to many hydro carbons at idle I think double what I was allowed. I also had .8% Carbon dioxide and your allowed 1%. The mechanic said that maybe my cat and O2 sensor aren’t working proplerly. What do you guys think?? Any help Appreciated. TIA

you can test the o2 sensor easily with a voltmeter. you can get one for like 10bucks at radioshack. invaluable tool imo. also pickup a haynes manual it tells you what to do. or download the helmes. try a search. also search for emissions tips ppl tried
If your running a stock setup then you will be needing a new catalytic converter. It just isnt burning up any of the unburnt fuels anymore.
There is a chance that it is your O2 sensor, but I doubt it.
Did you do a tune up before you went to do your test?? If you running bad spark plugs and/or cap & rotor then that could be your problem there. If your not getting a hot enough spark you wont be burning all of the fuel in the combustion chamber thus leaving lots of unburnt fuels, otherwise known as hydro carbons…
It is always a good idea to do a tune up before an emissions test.

I did some what of a tune up, cleaned out my injectors with an intake solution, changed fuel filter and pcv valve. About 2 months ago changed my plugs (platnums) and wires(ngk). How much is a new cat?
60-80 i think. might as well get a carsound highflow cat for like 85-100.
