Rust from replacement exhaust system?

So I just had a new exhaust system installed, but I notice that there is excessive amounts of rust that collect in the exhaust finishers. I’ve never had a new exhaust system installed so I’m curious if this is something that usually happens (a break in period) or if this is something of concern.

It is a stock exhaust system with aftermarket finishers.

Just currius, but can you clarify finishers?

did you mean exhaust tips?

most exhaust shops like minute muffler and other large chain companies weld without first coating the joint with a weld-through zinc coating or other weld friendly rust inhibitor. This leaves the weld joints exposed to the air and moisture inside the tube and causes rusting. So even if you are using a high quality OEM exhaust or custom stainless exhaust, the weld joints will eventually fail because they have no protection against the moisture and air in your exhaust system.

I would go back to the shop and get them to re-do the whole system.

Yes I mean exhaust tips. I don’t see any rust on the outside of the welded joint, but I’m guessing moisture is collecting in the tailpipe somehow and the exhaust gases and pushing the rust out and it’s collecting in the end of the exhaust tip. I’ll ask the shop on Friday about it. It seems really excessive especially for a new system.

Shops will usually paint over the outside of the weld joints. But this does not prevent the inside of the exhaust from rusting. And yes, I’m pretty sure the rust is building up inside and your exhaust gases are pushing it out.
