Now I don’t want to claim that I wrote this, (because I did not) but I found something that I felt I had to share here on G2IC. I have not seen this discussed here and it is a great idea. At the risk of getting flamed for where the DIY comes from, I just have to do it.
Protecting Parts With The Black Oxide Process
Protecting Parts With The Black Oxide Process
By Kevin Munson
The black oxide process is a very cost effective way to protect small parts like nuts, bolts and brackets from rusting. Every automobile manufacturer uses this process on their vehicles. It is a very simple process that anyone can do. The Eastwood Company sells a kit for $40, and includes everything you will need.
*
Start with your rusty or dirty parts.
* Clean them up, sandblasting is the best method.
* Dip the parts into the Blackening solution for approximately 30 seconds.
* Rinse parts of with water (Distilled water recommended)
* Dip parts in Sealant for 2-3 minutes, shake off excess.
* Let parts dry, usually overnight.
That’s all there is to it, now your parts will be permanently protected from rust and look great as well.
why dont u just POR it…brush the heads of the bolts with this black formula less than 20 bucks. i’ve used it on many cars with rust spots…5 yrs later? no bubble or sign of rust spreading. warning: POR will not come off your skin…as stated on the warning label - only time will remove it.
Thanks for the reply, but call me a dumb-ass, I have no idea what you are talking about? What is POR? While the heads are nice to have looking good, I will want the whole bolt and nut to look good & rust free. A good example, is the 2 spring bolts on the cat to header and the 3 bolts from the cat to b-pipe. Hell, just about every bolt I would like to do this to. I have not tried it yet, but I do trust alot of the info that I find on that sight. My alter ego has the task of keeping a 88’ Ford Ranger running so we can have a crap-hauler at the house. Good guys over there and not alot of foos like on H-T.
Sorry its what professional body workers use to prevent rush from spreading further.
"POR-15 is a rust-preventive paint designed for application directly on rusted or seasoned metal surfaces. It chemically bonds to rusted metal and forms a rock- hard, non-porous coating that won?t crack, chip, or peel.
POR-15 keeps moisture away from metal with a coating that is actually strengthened by exposure to moisture.
