Hi hi. I have skunk2 sleeves with koni yellows. When I eventually make it to a track event can someone give me advice on how changing a damping rate will affect handling? Do I take that plastic cap thing that says koni on it and turn it on the top screw of the shock to adjust?
Colin - those fronts are pimptastic! I think you’ll be fine but I’ll measure mine and we’ll compare. Off the top of my head, I think yours are shorter.
Did Duy just say pimptastic?
I still haven’t gotten around to ordering my GC’s yet, but I think I might be in Temecula this weekend. If I have time I want to test fit the shocks. Install them w/o the coilovers and see what the suspension travel looks like and try to figure out how low the car should be in order to not compromise too much compression or rebound travel. Anyone know much about the best way to set that up?
I don’t think you’d be able to install those shocks with stock springs
As short as our shocks are, travel really hasn’t been an issue. I’ve never bottomed out with these shocks.
I think he’s talking about installing them without springs.
Colin, I would install on of the fronts and then put the wheel on. Note the ride height(wheel location), then jack up the wheel to see where it sits at the top and bottom of the shock travel. Then do the same for the rear. I did something similar with Bret, but we were looking at camber and toe at the two locations(static and bump).

I spent some time friday taking measurements on the tokico/skunk setup and then comparing it to the Yellows (didn’t actually install them). All my measurements are from the center of the axle to the lip of the fender. And I only had a chance to do the front of the car, I’ll do the rear later.
Initial measurement: 32.2cm (car lowered about 2-2.5")
Natural Suspension Droop: 37.6cm (where the suspension rests w/o any shock or spring installed)
Bumpstop contact point: 31.5cm (bumpstop is about 2cm long)
Point at which UCA contacts inner fender: ~29.0cm (hard to tell exactly, plus this will change depending on camber adjustment, my measurement was with my ingalls kit and correcting probably 1.5deg of camber).
So, my suspension setup before was pretty shitty:
Droop Travel: 5.4cm
Compression Travel (till bumpstop): ~0.7cm
Compression Travel (shock bottomint out): ~2.7cm
Then I compared the Illumina side by side with a Koni.
Shock Body Length
Tokico Illumina 30 cm
Koni Race 26 cm
Shock Travel
Tokico Illumina 11.5 cm
Koni Race 7.0 cm
Now I just need to figure out what ratio of droop travel to compression travel I want. Bump stop size and durometer may be factors here as well. I also found out that these new shocks have droop limiters in them. So I am assuming that if the shock ends up at full droop while driving it isn’t dangerous for the shock. But I need to check on this stuff.
Now, and a disconcerting note… When I pulled the shocks out of the box on friday I noticed some fluid on them. There was extra fluid on each shock up by where they are sealed. Possibly this is just some spillage from filling. I really hope there isn’t a problem with them as far as them being sealed properly.
