s.cal: Redlinetrack event 4-20-07(SofW)... any socal guys going?

Sup to the OG socal G2 crew:salute: , anyone attending this streets of willow track day? …see yea there…

I had toyed with the idea of heading up to Buttonwillow on the 28th for the Redline event, but most of the guys I know will be at the SpeedVentures event at Buttonwillow on the 7-8 so I might try and make it to that instead. If you’re going, maybe we can get a small group together and head up there with you? I doubt anyone’s car is ready for another event at the moment, but I’m always up for shooting some pictures and going to the track to tune a bit if I have the time to.

I wish I could make it. I love Streets. Unfortunately, I’m still dealing with this:

Such a sad photo :frowning:

A more happy photo… of my new Race shocks

I was thinking of this one, just cause of the chance of it being $80.

I’ll be at SoW the following week on 2 wheels.

Very nice, Colin!

welcome to the world of custom Koni. What did you have done?

SPSS valving and had 'em shortened. Although I’m hoping they won’t be too short now as the guy shortened 'em 2". I told him to just make them the same length as whatever the normal DA Race shocks were, but I think 2" is more that that. So hopefully it ends up OK. I still need to order my ground controls and then when I get a free weekend I’ll fool around with fitting them on the car.

are you also running the koni spss valving?

Truechoice Phase-4 Koni EG based. They’re shortened, double adjustable modded, and valved but I’m not sure if its SPSS or something else.

When I send my fronts back to TC, I want to have them take another inch off the shock if possible.

with my current setup, one click of compression damping is immediately noticable. With Ray in the car, I was +2 and the rear end was all over the place. With your brother in the car, I was at 0 and the car pushed. +1 and the car was perfectly neutral. I was very surprised to feel much the adjustments affect the car. You’ll be happy I’m sure.

I thought you were eye-balling the PIC’s.

PS: how would you rate ProParts? A huge + for them is that they’re local.

yeah, I had looked at the PIC’s, but most of the info I found was that the Koni’s were just better shocks. And when it came down to it the Koni/GC setup was cheaper for me as well.

What spring rates are you running right now? My Skunk’s are 10k/8k, and I didn’t have any complaints, but I still think I’d like to dabble in some higher spring rates. I’m thinking I’ll order 650/550, then combined with my old springs (assuming they are the right length) I should have a few good options and be able to set it up front bias, rear bias or the same front to back.

It seems a lot of people like to go quite a bit higher in spring rate but after some reading in the Race forum I think I might want to keep 'em only moderately high and just focus on my driving more than trying to tweak spring rates.

oops, forgot to answer your question about ProParts.

Overall I’m pretty happy. Jeff seems like a nice guy, turnaround time was pretty quick (faster than from the main Koni rebuild center). My only complaint is that he didn’t follow directions exactly. The thing about the shortening bugs me a little. Hopefully he knows what’s best and just did that instead of shortening to the length of a normal DA race shock. Additionally I had wanted to purchase all new hardware (snap rings, bumpstops, nuts…) but he didn’t include any of that stuff or even mention anything about it. I got the shocks used so I don’t really have all of those bits.

I’m pretty happy with the 550F/450R setup right now.

The tuning is a click one way or the other @ this point.

I agree with the comment about sticking with the higher rates. If I ever get to Patriku’s level, I may feel the difference 50# of spring will give but @ this time, I’m still working on turning/braking/accelerating.

The only thing that was hard to find were the bushing sleeves since koni shocks use a 12mm shaft vs. the OEM 10mm. Aside from that, the thread is M12x1.25 just like the radius rods so I used a set of those. A plus with those bolts is that they’re self locking.

How long is your shock body? If you measure yours, I’ll measure mine and we’ll compare #'s.

That sounds dirty, but I’m really talking about dampers.

Hey, whatever you want to call it. :giggle:

I think I need to adjust my compression damping so I don’t bottom out so quickly

Alrighty boys, now get your minds out of the gutter!

I took photos of the shocks next to a tape measure when I got 'em back from ProParts, here are the links:

Front
Rear

I have larger versions too if those are too hard to see, or if you want I can take specific length measurements. I’m very interested to see how these compare to yours… and I really want to see 'em next to the Illuminas on my car right now.

Wow, those things look good. I think I need them back please. :violin:
