sagging rear bumper

On my 90’ GS 2 door my rear bumper sags a little bit. Nothing bad but there is about a half inch gap on the sides above the bumper and under the rear quarter panels. Its looks really bad to me though because you can see a bunch of white clips in that half inch gap.

How do I make the top of the bumper sit flush with the bottom of the rear quarter panel??

im thinking that the screws that connect the bumper to the clip in the wheel wells are missing. maybe they fell out on the road or something. so check that out. other than that im not sure.

Hers a pic of my bumper. The passenger side is worse than the driver side. Dont flame too bad for the dirty car, just got back from a 1800 mile trip (that the teg took flawlessly by the way).

hmm. is it sagging in the back too or just the sides?

does it move at all when you push up on it?

I tried to push the bumper up and it doesnt move at all. Its pretty much locked in that position so I dont really think its missing any bolts.

and yeah, the rear has a gap too. It goes from the gap size on the driver side and progressively gets wider down the bumper until it gets to the gap size on the passenger side.

And also, its kinda hard to tell from the pic but on the driver side the bumper actually kinda sticks out about a half inch right behind the rear driverside wheel as well as hangs down a bit.

Theres no real damage to my bumper (except for those few scrapes in the one pic) so it shouldnt really be broken or anything unless something happened to iit I dont know about and I just cant see the damage.

So how can I lift my bumper to sit flush with the quarter panels and rear metal piece, and also push the driver side in a little bit so it sits flush there too?? Its stupid little stuff like this that drives me nutz.

there are four mounting bolts for the bumper
you could try adjusting those
two are under the car (under plastic covers)
two are in the hatch area
loosin those have a friend lift up the bumper and re tighten

ok, I tried loosening the bolts and had my brother try and lift it while I tightened them back up. Well the bumper really wouldnt move up at all so that really didnt do anything.

Anyone else?? How do I get rid of that ugly gap??? Also, how do I get rid of the driver side of the bumper sticking out a half inch?? Even if I can lift the bumper up to get rid of that gap, how would I bring that driver side inwards so that also sits flush?

:bump:

take it to a body shop
they can tell you how to do it

well thats kinda the whole point of asking on here. I dont wanna pay to fix it. It isnt really damaged or that bad so I shouldnt have to result to going to a body shop to fix it.

Nobody on here has every had this problem before?? My car is pretty straight overall and this rear bumper makes it look like crap.

Mine has the same problems as well, but even worse. The spots where the plastic tabs are that hold onto the bumper are rusted so there isnt much to holding on the bumper. Just be thankful yours is still on. But in this case, I would suggest going to a shop and just ask “how hard would it be to fix this?”… The shop might say that it would take them 20 mins to adjust and it would be less than $100 to do it. Sometimes it is easier to let the pros do the work.

Yea the adjustment is in the bolts holding the bumper support on, two that you can axcess from the inside, and two underneith. It migh just be tight since if the support hasnt been off, but that is what you need to do. The other other possibity is that the cover is loose, but you said it felt tight so it most likely needs to be adjusted.

if you were in the northeast, i would say there’s rust under there…
but being in arizona, i can’t imagine it’s rust.
your car prbably got “bumped” just enough to knock everything out of whack.
where those 2 screws go thru on the rear of each wheel well, there are those plastic things that flea mentions. they have like a “slide” motion to them(to absorb impacts) your problem probably is there.
take the bumper off and check them

I have to work today but when I get home I’ll try taking the bumper off and messing with it. My car and I originally came from Seattle, not AZ, but I still doubt rust is the problem. This car doesnt have any rust on it anywhere.
