just installed new timing belt and a very loud screeching noise comes from the engine when it’s running. all the drive belts seem to be ok, and i’m fairly sure i got the tension right on the t-belt. any suggestions that don’t include taking everything apart again? thanks.
hey dude, there can’t be any screeching from timing belt… if it slips (god forbids) ur engine is history…
is the sound directly proportional to RPM? does it go away after a while or at high revs?? Check the normal belts or the belt tenssioner pully… that is where the sound comes from usually. Consult other openions as well, mine is not conclusive.
Try looking at all the other accessory belts too to make sure one of them is not loose causing this.
well, the rear timing belt cover is all bent and is rubbing on the cam pulleys. you can actually see smoke as the plastic burns off. i followed the tensioning procedure in the vtec cams tegtips, but when i loosened the tensioner bolt, it didn’t take up the slack in the intake side of the belt. i replaced the tensioner pulley when i did the t-belt, should i replace the spring as well? i don’t really understand how the tensioner works. please, if possible, shed some light on this for me. thanks.
well, i can easily move the belt more than an inch left/right on the intake side. it is tight everywhere else. loosening the tensioner pulley does nothing though, i guess i need a new spring. has anyone ever had to replace their tensioner pulley spring? thanks
well this is a helpful idea that G2Guru had given me. Take a wire clothes hanger and bend it so that you can get it to grab on the spring. Pull up (not too hard!!!) and this should pick up the slack. HTH

This is what I use to loosen and tighten the tensioner.
