I searched and couldn’t find anything on the subject (no I’m not asking how to shave emblems or how much it will cost). I am looking to shave my wing and emblems off of the hatch. I know of the different ways to do it and I was thinking about welding the peices of metal behind the holes. I want to do the metal peices, body work, and prep myself and then take it to a shop to have it primed and painted.
Now, my question is… could I just use cut small squares of metal out and use JB weld generoussly to attach the squares of metal to the underside of the hatch? Would this be sufficent in holding the bondo and metal peices onto the hatch? Would it crack apart in a year? Would it be just as good as regurally welding them on? Can anyone see any problems with doing this?
Any input from my DA brothers is appreciated . Thanks
i learned on here awhile back that JB weld is the most practical way to do it.
the best way would be to actually weld the holes shut. But thats sorta pricy, and the holes are so small that you really don’t have to.
you could just bondo the holes shut, but that won’t last too long. Eventually the bondo could fall out. It can work though, you just need to do it right.
I shaved the emblem holes on my spare hood w/ jb weld and it worked great. Just remember:
-grind down to bare metal
-use a hammer and a punch to put a small divet where each hole is. This gives more surface area for the weld to stick to
-apply the jb weld to span the hole. apply generously and get close to filling the divet.
-next apply bondo and finish just like you would any small dent or imperfection in a panel
You need to weld the holes closed. Any other way and you will keep redoing it again and again. Do it right the first time.
Metal shrink and expands. If you put something on the metal like jb weld or just fill it with bondo, it will also shrink and expand, but at a different rate than the metal. This will cause the holes to be visible in the paint after time. The paint can be color sanded but they will come back.
