shifter getting funky with me..help

hey guys. well my shifter has been popping up and down, like i can pull it straight up and down, and it is very irritating. Tongiht i took it apart and looked at it. the rubber bushing was torn to shreds, so i just put a layer of tape over the ball ( which came off quickly once installed ) my question is, was it the torn bushign that caused this problem or is it the shifteR? anyone else ever have this problem…?

I also have a bolt on (not the oem style screw on, but an aftermarket ) shift knob and i cut off maybe an inch off the top of my shifter, and it got a lot shorter. very cool mod. just make sure you measure it right otherwise the bottom piece that covers up the treads wont fit …but mine rattled at 7 grand so i took it off anyway. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Any bushing gets worn over the years. How long have you had yours? Also, I believe it depends on how you shift. Do you shift often and hard?

Also, something to check while you’re working on your tranny. Manual says about this:

Slips out of gear

  • Worn or improperly adjusted linkage
  • Transmission/transaxle loose on engine
  • Shift linkage does not work freely, binds
  • Input gear bearing retainer broken or loose
  • Dirt between clutch cover and engine block
  • Worn shift fork

I reckon anyone of those may have possibly worn out your bushings prematurely.

Oz

thanks for your help oz-- it has never slipped out of gear, just the ball will pop up and down (the ball…where the point of pivot is). the shifter is actually still connected to the arm that goes into the tranny, but that’s basically what is holding it in. it’s kinda hard to explain and i’ve never seen anyone else w/ this problem. we’ll see what happens down the road…

and for the record i shift a lot, but not very hard.

while at it, get Prothrean bushings for the shifter 12$, www.suspension.com (if I remember right)

1990-00 Transmission shifter stabilizer bushing set 16-1101 $8.00, i got that from the site.Thats the piece that go through the shifter, right?

thanks,
ryan

Yep, they get worn out through the years and it also does have to do with how your shift, and of course if you get mad and hit down on your shifter…not like I’ve ever done that before…

Brushings are cheap so I’d get some of those asap.

i already have energy suspension’s bushing kit, the one that was like $15 or whatever it was.

BTW:: if you have an aftermarket shift knob i highly recommend cutting it down a little bit. Feels so crispy, and short. i love it.

u have installed the bushings already? Do they feel good?? I’m thinking of ordering them.
