Shifter getting hot

The other day i installed my Tenzo R short throw shifter and i left the heat shield thats above the catalytic converter off… Ive heard that it will rattle against the short shifter. My car is pretty much stripped out because i just got a new interior wiring harness put in also ( which costed about 700$$ with installation!!) because the old one was fried. Anyhow the problem is when i was driving i felt the shifter and it was burning hot from the exhaust heat and i wondering if this is safe. Im afraid that it might burn my shift boot when i put my interior back in. I mean its not so hot that i cant keep my hand on it but its definetly hot.

I’d try putting the heat shield back on and seeing if it does actually rub with your specific short shifter… If it does, see if you can maybe bend it or dent it or something so that it gives the shifter some clearance, while keeping the heat away from the shifter.

But I wouldn’t think it would melt the shift boot. I’d be more concerned about the bushings (especially if you have aftermarket urethane bushings)

the aftermarket bushings is not a prob cuz i dont have them but thanx for the advice i was thinking of denting it or something along the lines to get it to fit because im pretty sure it will rattle bad if i dont… it hangs a lot lower then the stocker shifter and is real and i mean real close to the cat conv.

yes this is a very common occurance. you probably have a metal shift knob, right? maybe one of those Type-R “like” knobs? it’s unavoidable with a short shifter and your heat shield off.

the best thing to do would be to get a knob that doesn’t conduct heat, ie: one wrapped in leather, etc.

i have a chrome momo shift knob, an aluminum short shifter, and no heat shield. i can hear them hit when i shut my door but thats it. doesnt get hot or anything. all i did was make my own smaller heat shield right around the area the shifter is. mine is a small thin sheet of metal but you can probably wrap your exhaust pipe in that thermal paper that people use in their intakes and headers.

yo, so i take it the install went okay?

No im sportin the stocker knob and its just the shifter itself was really hot and i was concerned about it :read:

it shouldn’t be a big problem since most of the members on this board don’t have a heat shield with their short shifter… but you should try what spacedout did…

ok, thank you for the replies

yeah, the “ebay” short shifter works great along with the poly bushings. it did hit the heat shield but i wanted to get rid of that anyway. is there anything i can do abot the shift boot though? its too big for the shifter and looks dumb all pushed in.

are you using a short aftermarket shift knob? it shouldn’t look too bad. if you use your stock shift knob (it has that extra length @ the bottom) it’ll push it down too much.

its a momo knob, but its not that much shorter than stock, just nicer

you need to get a short knob (one that only goes to the end of the thread) to make it look less bunched up.

on my civic there are no heat shields undr the car and the shifter and tunnel get really hot after driving long and hard (hehe). There seems to be no bad things though. If you are really worried about it get a big aluminum shift knob, it’ll help dissipate (sp) heat.
