Shifter moving around, need help.

I’ve just bought a car today. From what I know everything is stock except the intake. I know i have a short shifter but the problem is that when i shift into any gear I can move that sucker left and right just like as if it was in neutral. This is my first stick shift so i really dont know much about the problems so if any body can help me out pls do so. Thank you.

new shifter bushings should help.

jack the car up, support it with jackstands, then have a buddy sit in the car, and move the shifter back & forth while it is in gear. inspect areas of where u see play.

in the front of the shift linkage, there is a joint that connects a big black bar to the transmission. if there is play in there, then that would cause the shifter to be sloppy. - replace the shift linkage

if the play is where the bushing is at the rear of the linkage or at the front of the shift stabalizer bar (solid bar running along side of the shift linkage) then u would just need bushings.

also, if the shifter has play moving up & down, then it can also be the ball bushing that is bolted down into the shift stabalizer bar…

good luck

Bushings

I have the same prob with this my first teg. What are the best bushings to get? Stock or other? I also plan on putting a short shifter in, in the neer future.

I would’nt get stock ones. Go with Engery Suspension or Prothane should be about $15

bushings

Where would I find them? All the bushings in the linkage are bad but I can only find the 2 bushings .

There are only 2 rubber bushings to replace. One at the front of the stabilizer bar and one at the back.

is it bad to drive with a sloppy shifter… ive been going on 2 years and counting… im used to it now… i dont miss shifts or have any problems just wondering if its bad

To get some ES bushings, just get on Ebay.
I have also bought from these guys. They are a good company to deal with IMO. I first bought via their Ebay account, then bought a master kit from them direct.

No its not bad to drive with sloppy bushings, as long as you don’t use it as a handle to prop on, or jam it into gears. Though that advise is probably good even if you have good bushings. Just don’t get crazy with it.

no i never grand gears it hasnt been a problem with me at all but its really sloppy… liike u can have it in 3rd and you can move it over to 1st or 5th and it would look like it was in thos gears

its not the shifter bushings
its the round busing that goes around the ball
i had the same problem
trust me

i had the same problem after my 5spd swap

can you get that bushing after market? The one around the ball?

no but oem is like 8 bucks
