Short-Shifter help

I bought a short shifter for a 90-93 integra, mine being a 91, I followed the steps on the tips page on g2ic’s website to install a short shifter, i dont know if i did it wrong or what, but after installation, the bottom of the shifter/shift linkage, rubs very hard against the heat shield, making it near impossible to shift… The receipt says 90-93 then 94-01… I told them to send me the right 90-93…
I noticed the bottom of the throw arm was longer then the stock shifter, but i thoguht that was the concept of a short shifter…I also put 2 little brass spacers that came with the shifter on both sides of the shifter bearing. I was looking at the tips page closely on how to install one, and the length on the one the guy installed on his car, and mine were from looks identical, i didnt notice the guy installing any spacers on his either… I looked at additional pictures of 90-93 short shifters on ebay, and soem said actual picture of the shifter, they too look exactly like mine…

Is it possible that i installed the shifter wrong? and i didnt push it far enough up in there, although i pulled from inside very hard, and pushed hard from outside… OR is it possible they sent the wrong part to me, even thoguh the receipt says 94-01, but also says 90-93. The wholesaler i boguht it from had nothing but 3000+ accounts of good praise from people, maybe i just got shitty luck or something…

Thank you for reading this long post, im desperate for answers seeing as how i cannot drive the car because the old shifter’s bearing was totally broken so i cannot use it again, and shifting is near impossible with the short shifter the way it is now…

thank you thank you thank you… now i must go smash my head into a wall for i am angry and hungry at once.:bang: :bang:

about the rubbing… recently, i’ve heard about someone installing a short shifter also… not sure what brand… but it also rubbed the heat shield… so they removed it. then it was smooth shiftin…
the concept of a short shifter is a shorter top, from the ball up… if the arm is longer from the ball down compared to your stock… then maybe they’ve sent u the wrong one… if all else fails from help from other guys here also… u should try to call up the shop, most likely who sold it to u, then tell them that u want to exchange one, for the same thing… because it might’ve had a manufacturer defect…
(sorry… im sleepy right now… and i dont know some words im saying, so plz excuse me for spelling)
and the recipt said 94 - 01 and 90 - 93?
i’ve seen some short shifters that say that also… but others that specify 90 - 93, or 94 - 01, but doesn’t say non interchangable

they generally rub against it. either bend it out of the way or take it off completely. the heat shield that is

i just installed a dc short shifter and it rubbed on the heat sheld. I tried to bend it but i couldn’t bend it in the right spot and keep the bolt holes lined up so i just took it off. Now its nice and smooth.

it rubs aginst the heat shield that covers the cat right?

yea but mine goes all the way back past the short shifter

ahh what I don’t get about the “heat shield” if it’s under neath the cat at the bottom of the car, what’s it protetcing heat from? doesn’t matter if heat goes udner the car… or is it a plate taht is above the cat betweehn the cabin of the car and the cat?

Ok first off the section of the short shifter below the ball IS supposed to be longer, that is what changes the shift geometry or the actual distance of the throw. Changing the length of the shifter above the ball only changes the hight of the shifter, but the throw will be the same distance. And the best way to alleviate the rattling is to pull off the heatshield that is directly under the shifter and cut a hole out around where the rear section of the shift rod hits the heat shield. I didn’t have a hole saw so I used a chisel and cut out about a 1"x3" square and I used a file to clean up the edges.

hth

Hmm, so alot of ppl had this same problem… Well i was thinking of just shortening the bottom of the shifter from the ball down by cutting it and welding it back together, or sending it back and getting another one which would probably end up the same… But now i will try to either use tin snips to cut a hole in it, remove it all together, or cut a hole with a cutting torch…

Thank you all very much for your help, this was a big let down for me, because i do all my work to my car, and when soemthing like this happens it makes me feel like crap. Hopefully one day i will be able to have my car in a club like this, but for now im going to keep it low key until i get more stuff done to it.

dont feel bad man my car isnt really that awsome but its slowly getting there. Just be patient and 1 day it will be how you want it. Just keep pluggin away.

:ok: SHifter works well now, used a wheel grinder to make a hole big enough for the shifter to move freely in it, What a huge difference this makes. Thanks again for the help guys, id still be wondering waht to do had you of not givin me the ideas.

think ya can take pics of the udnerside of where ya cut and how it looks?

yea… plz… pics… cause i might run into that problem when i do conversion, and get my short shifter in… hehe

Short Shift

I just did a skunk2 short shift. It rubbed. Tin snips went through that heat shield like butter. And I only had to remove the section that the shifter linkage rubbed against.

I just took mine off, and cut around where the shifter had any chance of touching. that way i kept some of it at least whether its effective at all or not, and it doesnt rub.
