short shifter rubbing exhaust

ok guys, I installed a short shifter and I can feel and hear it rubbing the exhaust at times, especially when going for reverse or 5th. Any ideas? It is a no name from ebay, probly the cause of the trouble. Anyone else have this problem, if so, how did you fix it?

Thanks,
Shaun

Do a search. Many have had the same problem

The shift linkage is hitting teh heat shield. There are three options

  1. remove the heat shield (not recomended)
  2. Cut out the area that the linkage is hitting on the heat shield
  3. Cut the end off the back of the linkage with a hacksaw

yeah , i have that same problem man…just barely got it installed and i have the same problem going into 5th and Reverse…yeah. i think it’s rubbing against the piping or the heat shield…i don’t like the feel of it…i think i’ma put the stock back on if i can’t solve that problem…

Well, I removed all the heat shielding and it still rubs. But I read on another post that someone was able to bend the exhaust hangers to allow the piping to sit a little lower and it solved the problem. I am going to try this out.

Be careful if you’re bending the hangers.

One time, a shop installed my hangers wrong and my exhaust was hanging too low and it put too much pressure on the back section causing that to break within a couple months. But of course that was in the extreme temp changes here in winnipeg, not to mention the salt on the streets at the time… Yours might hold together fine… <shrug>

On your shift linkage there is a counterweight. That is what is rubbing your exhaust. Cut the counterweight off and you’ll be happy.

bend the hangars its only like a 1/2 in. it won’t affect anything. if your worried about breaking somethin loosen axle back section bend them then tighten it all back up
