short throws?!

ive seen one’s from dc and all the other name brands. but my question is, are most of them all the same?! i always see 90-01 integra and 88-96civic, or something along the lines of that. why pay $100 when i can get a apc or ractive for $30??? the apc ones say they fit 92-00 civics and they have one bend in then, and the other ones say there for 94-00 integras and they have 2 bends in them. i really dont want to pay $100 for a short throw.

my b&m edge was only 50 bucks. I think the apc’s use an aluminum shifter, which I’ve heard some members say is much more prone to failure versus a steel shifter like the b&m. Although you’d have to do some pretty serious shifting to snap that shaft I would think. I’ve also heard some people say that the steel shifters are heavier and provide a better weighted feel while shifting. I honestly can’t compare though because I’ve only used my b&m. I’ve also heard that the solo shifter is a good one and pretty cheap. Anyway, good luck with your search.

Get a Solo. Mine was $85 CAN and apparently it’s one of the best.

hey a short throw is a short throw they are all the same i have a obx short throw that costed 30 bucks and it works fine. someone told me it reminds them of the short throw in the rsx’s

can anyone give me a link to where i can buy a solo or obx?? i just got $40 in tips today and i need to spend it on my car!!!

hey i got my obx short throw from ebay. get it there. i usually get everything from ebay. except for my rims and suspension. if you need suspension i can find you a good deal. for around 550 for shoxks and springs

yes a “short throw is a short throw” but the difference is, if you buy a cheap alluminum one… it could snap. it’s happened to many members on this board already… many have been just fine w/ an alluminum one, but just something to think about.

i do tend to shift very hard when racing (found this out last night)
so should i play it safe and get like a steel b&m??

if you tend to shift hard, then yeah i say play it safe. the b&m tends to sit “forward” away from you, and some don’t like it as much (some do).

i personally like the ones w/ the stock “bend” to it, so it sits at about the same spot in neutral as your stock shifter. neuspeed, dc sports, etc all sit like this (basically any of the ones w/ a bend in the shaft). HTH

ever been in an s2000? all i can say is silky smooth. the combo i have feels pretty close to that. got the B&M unit for over a year and a half, i also have the aluminum bushing kit. this combo is smooth and solid.period. IMO, i’d spend a little bit more for the steel shifter, better feel, more solid, and deffinately get the aluminum bushings. you wont be disappointed!

im ordering the b&m this weekend after i get my paycheck. was are these aluminum bushings? i know of poly bushings and thats what i planed on getting.

yeah, the bushings i used were solid aluminum, B&M i think??? yeah pretty sure, easy to put on, adjustable too. get em if ya can find em. i think i might have got them from summit or nopi?

This is kind of off the original subject but I figure what the hell. I heard that when you get a short throw you have to do something to the fire wall or the whole shifter will get real hot. Is this true or just a rumor?
Thanks

the reason it gets hot is most people remove their exhaust heat shield when they install a short shifter. The short shifter hangs lower than stock and it hits the heat shield… but the consequence is more heat gets to the shifter… and if you have a metal shift knob (ie: type r knob etc) then it gets really hot after you’ve driven for a while. no problem for leather knobs like momo.

B&M Shorty

I’m running the B&M shorty; super solid (billet steel) and very solid, short throws (w/ bushing kit)…

Yes, the B&M sits farther forward. Its a straight stick so does not compensate for the “stock” neutral position… I dig it though, as I have long, orangutan arms hehe

Oh yah, Tony, Leif does have the DC and not the B&M (hehe)… I got to shift the monster in whistler and you are right, the DC sits low in the stock position.

As for the heat issues, I live in WA so can’t really speak on heat (we don’t have a sun up here)… but, I’m running the B&M without heat shields, with a billet Skunk2 shift knob and I have felt no heat buildup whatsoever - can’t speak for the guys in Cali or Hawaii though…

Finally, as to whether the OBX/APC/SpeedPeople knockoff shifters are the “same” as a B&M or DC, Tony (92GS-R) has held both a “knock-off” and my B&M side by side… notice any difference Tony? hehehe Its like comparing a tree to a twig… The knock-offs honestly feel hollow or weak next to the billet steel…

That’s my .02
