Single Din Cup holder

Right now I’m trying to figure out or make a piece that will make the aftermarket/OEM stereo work and the cup holder underneath without it binding. So its secure in there. When its done I’ll show you guys and post pics. I’m probably going to start this when I go home for the xmas. I need to go to the store though and look at their aftermarket stereo holders and see how complicated or not they are, which I don’t think they are.

Ok, so did anyone ever find a nice and secure way of doing this? I run out and but the cup holder, but now realize that no one has posted a way to do this and make it nice and secure. I imagine that Steve just pulled everything and just put in the stereo and cupholder in the din space. Is there such thing as a single cup din.

I know everybody hates them, but taurus cup holders are din sized and fit good in our center console. They are great if you drink lots fo canned stuff or small fountain drinks. check the archives.

re: cup holder

Hey Ben glad you responded. I checked out the archives and searched. The only question I am not seeing answered is what din holder is being used for the stereo? My stereo has a pocket below, did you cut that, or did you find a single din holder, and just had a space below your stereo? What do you suggest I do. Here is a pic of my stereo. Could you tell me where you are hosting images? All the links to your pictures don’t work (i tried taking the orig out of the links and still no luck). E-mail me some if you can

Not a great pic but you get the idea. The stereo is pretty much just sitting on the cup holders. Big cups dont fit at all. Pretty much only cans fit.

re: holder

so my main question is are you using a single din holder for your stereo (if so where did you get it), or did you have to cut your double din pocket out of the bottom to fit the cup holder?

I have a couple big cups with the bottoms designed for holders like these to fit great. Just want to get it installed.

urs should be single din too. that pocket should slide right out. try taking the stereo out and see.

Use the stereo just like it is. Just take the pocket out and replace it with the cup holder things (you have to modify it, though). You can get them at junk yards, just ask the guy to go look at tauruses (like 89-95 or something). look in the archives on how to modify it.

Ben, is that a Nakamichi I see behind your frosty beverages? Looks suprisingly like one if not.

re: cup holders

Okay, since there aren’t any more good pics on the G2IC site of installation of the Taurus cup holder, I have decided to post a few modification pics.

re: pics

pic 1 (top), this shows the ends that are shaved off

pic 2 This shows where the tabs on the left and right side need to be cut (already done in picture)

pic 3 this shows the peice on the bottom of the unit that needs to be shaved and also shows that the ends have been shaved off

pic 4 I sanded the sides down so the din isn’t as wide, the holes are now closer to the outside edge

pic 5 This is a bracket that I got to do my mod since none of you could tell me where to get a single din holder. I am going to cut the bottom din pocket out, and it will rest on top of the cup holder. Ideally, i would just use a single din holder, at best buy the guy told me that some Toyottas have single dins, but unfortunately they didn’t have them. As stated, the current double din is one peice, and as you can see it will be easier to cut this new bracket than that whole pocket out of my current aftermarket holder.

re: cupholders

Well, for the rest of you wondering, I ended up cutting up my existing aftermarket pocket out of the bottom din, and ended up with just a peice of plastic that has 3 sides that only go around the stereo. Thei peice of plastic was held in by the cupholder, I left the clips on the cupholder (ben cut his off). It actually isn’t hard to get off, you just need to unscrew the whole console and then get if from behind. I did this because I wanted everything to be really secure. The clips on the cup holder hold very well. i just grabbed something to keep the cupholder at the right angle (a dried up sponge), and put everything back. Know it looks very nice. Not as flush as I would like, but I will work on that maybe some other time. It still looks very nice. I would like to fill the holes with something. Possibly hobby putty and then paint it black. So, if you have the din with pocket below, just need to cut it. I didnt’ use the bracket form pic 5, I am returning that thing ASAP and going to buy a mocha to put in my cupholder. I can see what ben is talking about, the holders can hold big cups, but big cups get in the way of the rest of the center console.

re: cupholders

Do you guys think it is possible for the stereo not to stick out so far? Mine does and I would like for it to be more flush. I think that coffee cups are way too close to the stereo. Also, I saw someone have the cupholders on top. How the heck would it hold a cup?

Whats a Nakamichi? Sorry, I’m dumb.

re: bottle

Hey Ben, is that bottle leaning against the dash kinda crooked? That’s how mine fit. I now need to adjust my drinking habits to my cup holder. Oh well, I sure like having extra cupholders though. The armrest holders I have are worthless. Put if my girl and I ever pull over for some lunch, we will have a total of 6 “cup holders” for drinks and a spot between the seast by the ebrake. Should be enough to survive the hot summers up here.

Yeah the bottle is there to show that it wont fit. Having cupholders is very nice, no more trying to work the clutch with a can between your legs.

By your answer I will assume I am wrong.
Nakamichi makes Home and Car audio equipment, some say their quality has dropped since they changed ownership in the mid 90’s or so, but I still like them because of their understated design.

So the answer to your question is that I was talking about the head unit (stereo) behind the drinks in the pic.

and no you are not dumb, it is a little known company.

Nope, it’s a kenwood that skips when it’s cold out.
