Slow To Respond Speedometer... Already Replaced the Cable

Well last week I was lucky enough to have a break in the weather long enough to bring the DA to work for the night. I have just replaced the speedo cable with a brand new Honda unit, so I hope that is not the issue. My speedometer is very slow to sweep through 60 km/h (37 mph) to about 80 km/h (50 mph). The odd part is that when you physically move the needle up past the issue spot it sweeps back to 0 with no signs of binding or restriction. It used to do this occasionally a couple years ago and was quite intermittent when it did. But while I have the dash out of the car I figured I should ask because it will most likely be easier to fix at this point. So if you have any prior experience with this or have any ideas let me know.

if you have a new cable, and there is no binding up anywhere… I would suspect the VSS on the transmission… although that would likely toss a CEL code…

any issues with the cluster?

It’s not throwing any codes and so far as I can tell the cluster is fine.

Did you reinstall the important “clip” on the vss? That could be a possible bad tach reading if the cable is not secured?

Yup I made sure I had the C clip installed correctly and that the tab on the cable was properly engaged in the VSS.

If it is not the cable it has to be the VSS or the gauge itself. 94

I would suspect the VSS first, it shouldn’t be too hard to source one from a junkyard… otherwise, you could get a cheap cluster off ebay and swap the speedo itself

Ditto the above ^^^, a VSS drive from PcknPull is $2.50, a cluster is $35.99 , you have a 90 Teg at the Edmonton yard, there is also one in the Calgary yard, we have 2 in our Kelowna yard, and all 3 have a 91. 94

Well then to Pick n Pull I go on days off to hunt for a VSS. Are they the same through 90-93?

Or maybe fix it, here is a pretty good write up with pix, looks easy enough.

It will also tell you if the VSS is the problem befor you spend time/money getting a part you do not need…

There a proper way installing the clip ?
