SNELL 95 or better????

the local track that I run at out here has changed there rules about the Helmets. in the near future 6-1-06 they will be enforcing the rule that all helmets will NEED TO BE SNELL 95 OR BETTER.

my question is this. I currently own 3 helmets. 1 is a SNELL 85, a HJC that says DOT approved and another from bell that says DOT approved.

where do these helmets fall under as far as the SNELL 95 or better. I have no idea what is better when it comes to helmets except the price. what is SNELL 95 or better.

I found some helmets that are SNELL-M-2000 but what does this mean to me? thanks in advance.

the numbers 95, 85, and 2000 corresponds to a year. they have new safty updates every 5 years so thats y thos numbers are mutiplies of 5.

i think the “M” stands for motorcycle. if you get into road racing you would be required to have “SA” rated, and thos helmets are only good for 5 years.

peace

The SNELL rating is good for 15 years. As of now the 05’s are available. Youll have to find out your local regs to determine what helmet you wanna buy. Like stated, the M means motorcycle. At most autox type events thats more than acceptable. However if your racing at a racetrack other than drag, they might require a SA rating. Again check the local regulations to find out the requirements in your area.

so does SNELL take presidence over DOT? is a SNELL approved helmet better than the DOT? which one is higher? are they all DOT and SNELL approved just by looking at the year even though it doesn’t say it?

^^^ Definatly. Those cheesy styrofoam bike helmets you see on 5 year olds are DOT approved.

As far as the badging, they dont all say snell approved, but a lot do, and if there isnt a sticker inside saying what year of sneel rating it is, its actually not snell rated.

yes snell rated is better than just DOT aproved. snell rated helmets go thru much more agressive tests.
