I’ve got a 90 gs 5 speed and the gears are grinding a lot in recent months, so I think it’s time for a new one. I was just wondering if it would be more economical or reliable to rebuild the one I have or to swap in a new one. Also, if I swap one in, should I put in a 92 up tranny instead, and will it bolt in without any problems. Thanks in advance.
i would said get a new(used) one instead of rebuilding it, probably cost the same… if you were to get the 92-93 tranny you’ll need a new clutch since the teeths are different… but either tranny is good…
^^ Just curious why you would buy a used transmission for the same price of rebuilding the current one, and having a brand new transmission? It doesn’t make sense. If it’s going to be close price wise, just rebuild your current one. It will be fresh as apposed to buying one with wear and tear on it.
usally rebuilding tranny cost way more depend on the shop, unless u got sources… but why would u want a rebuilt tranny u know its messed before might happen again… and there been rumors around saying that some shops just buy used tranny and just tell u that they rebuilted your old one (probably only :ghetto: ones)… but imo i just rather look for a good condition used tranny instead of going thur the hassling of rebuilding it…
First off, yes I agree that rebuilding the transmission normally cost more, but YOU said “probably cost the same.” With that said, it makes no sense to say the transmission could start grinding again because it did before. Grinding gears is a result of worn syncros and in severe cases worn and chipped gears. Slamming gears, speed shifting, etc. is going to cause excessive wear on the transmission. So no matter what you do (used transmission or rebuild), if you drive the car like that it will eventually happen. So if it cost the same (doubtful) and your time is the only concern, rebuild it and have fresh syncros and seals versus the same but with 100K+ miles on it. Otherwise, we’re going to find another “Anybody heard of Syncromesh for grinding gears?” thread.
