Sound Of Escaping Steam From Engine Bay

My 92 GS has 187K on the clock and of course after replacing main relay, igniter, passenger’s axle and wheel bearings for the second time (damn you Autozone…), re-installing stereo correctly and changing the oil & filter this problem shows up. I originally thought the engine was overheating, but the hissing starts as soon as the engine is running even cold and slowly dies away when shut off. She starts and runs just fine with no smoke and no drips. I first noticed after a spirited drive when I shut the engine off and heard a loud hissing sound from the driver’s side. Has anyone come across this problem? :bang:

Have a buddy listen while the car is shut off, best thing you can do to narrow down the area it is coming from. The car is running correctly right? Just making a noise?

It’s actually a common sound from the intake or throttle body, it’s a valve on the manifold. And when you shut of the engine you can still hear it die out. That’s the air in the cylinders escaping back out. If it leaks out slowly then your good, if it leaks out fast then you might need new rings or a valve job.

I’m used to the sound from the intake when I shut the engine off, (sounds like someone gasping for air) but this is new completely different sound and is loudest on the driver’s side away from the throttle body.

Brake booster… :rimshot:
Had my “ah-ha” moment when I put my foot on the brake and the hissing went away. Confirmed when I shut the car off and the brake pedal went hard immediately.
