I hear noise coming out of my instrument cluster - it sounds like it’s coming out of the speedometer because as I speed up, the noise speeds up. It sounds like whiney. Any one have this problem? Is it hard to fix?
Thanks in advance,
-Rick

Replace your speedo cable and make sure install it correctly. They tend to wear out. I’ve replaced them in many Hondas/Acuras and this has been the problem…

Speedo cable huh? Was it hard to install? Or should I bring it to the dealer? thanks for the pic ![]()

speedo cables are fairly simple to install, just getting the cluster out is the problem, cuz it leaves not much room for your hand to go behind the cluster and disconnect the speedo from the cluster. what you could do is disconnect the speedo from the tranny, giving you more slack to pull the guage cluster out. HTH
Or you can do it the cheap easy way that wokrs the same… Where it plugs into your tranny, you can pull it out from there and grease it up real good and slide it back in… took me about 10 min… if you have any questions let me know!

Looks like I’ll do the cheap and easy way (really took 10 minutes?) Where do I start?
Yeh, i think my speedo cable needs some greasing too, its starting to whine a little. How does this 10 min cheap and easy way work?
If you ever pulled off you spedo cable from your tranny its cake work… Ill try to expalin as best as i can…
Find where your spedo cable goes into your tranny… It has a rubber boot covering it.
Pull that rubber boot off and up towards the top of the engine (to get it out of the way)
There will be a small C type clip that holds the end of the spedo cable to the tranny.
Take that clip off with needle nose pliers, small screwdrive, etc. whatever you can get down there to get it off. DONT LOSE THE CLIP!!!.
Pull the end out of the tranny, GENTLY!
There will be the end of the spedo cable! NOW… start to pull the cable out of the sleeve… GENTLY!!! It might take a min or so to get it out from behind the dash… JUST BE PATIENT!!!
I cant remember if I took it all the way out or just most of the way but just get the majority of it out.
Find some of your special (hi-temp is good) greese out and put a light layer over the whole cable. DO NOT CAKE IT ON THERE!!!
Once that is done, gently start to push the cable back towards the firewall/dash.
when you get as far as it will go, twist it back and forth so you make sure it goes into the gauge cluster. It should be fairly easy and you should kind of feel it click in.
Now just reverse the beginning steps to attach it back to the tranny and VOILA!!! You should have a non-squeeling spedo cable!!! NOTE: The C type clip is kind of tricky to get back on… just be patient!
I hope that was understandable to you guys. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Ill do the best I can to help!!

if u dont trust yurself …bring it to da dealer…
I replaced my speedo cable this week and it was pretty easy. Just take your time with removing the dash bezel. Disconnecting the cable from the cluster is a bit of a pain because there is next to no slack.
Hey Hyperrevsports where did you get that diagram from if you could post a link i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

It just slid right out… If i remember correctly it just has a “square end” that slides into a “square hole” behind the cluster. No brute force was necessary for me…

Any problem with bouncing needle afterwards?
Nope, No problems what-so-ever! ![]()

Don’t reply to two different posts on the same issue – ESPECIALLY when they are both old posts.
Also, try the dealer
PS: Have you tried lubing up the cable before buying a new one outright?
