Speedo still not working

Before you tell me to search, I have looked and I am still having problems. I pulled the cable out of my 92 LS using the method described without removing the cluster. Cleaned and re-greased the cable and re-inserted back into car. When I pulled the cable, it didn’t appear broken. It was kinda squared off on the end where it connects to the cluster? Is it supposed to be that way?
Since I replaced it, the speedo still does not move at all. I am thinking it may be busted at the cluster but I have not removed the cluster to check. Is it possible that the connector on the cluster itself is busted?
If I am not mistaken, isn’t the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) also connected to the cluster and not replacable? Can that go out causing the speedo to be non-operational? My odometer, cruise control and tach all work fine.
Thanks for any help at this point.

It should be squared off on the ends. My guess is you did not get it back in all the way it has to fit in a drive square on both ends. Check the easy things first.

Was it working before you took a part?

No, it wasn’t working before so I thought I would try the re-lube idea and see what happens.
I had to replace my Alternator about two weeks ago and I replaced all of my grounds because I was having problems with dash lights cutting out and other weird electrical things. The speedo hasn’t worked since then.

In my Haynes manual there is no indication that the speedo is anything but mechanical, it is not even shown in the wiring schematic for the “Instrument panel warning lights and gauges system” for a G2, but it is for the Legend. 91-95, [same manual] and the g3 tegs, 94-98 and 96-98 Civics, leads me to believe it is totally mechanical.
So as RX3 suggests, maybe its not “seated” properly at the speedo or in the tranny, the speedo or the cable drive in the tranny is bad. what I would try is disconnect it at the tranny like you did, and then connect a reversible variable speed drill to the speedo cable and see if you can get the speedo to move, if not, cable is not seating properly or speedo is bad, if it does work then cable is not seating properly in drive unit or drive unit is bad. You said cable is squared off at speedo end, but I believe RS3 is correct it should be squared at both ends, if its not, you have a broken cable. :hmm: 94

Make sure you can hear a click when you reinsert the cable to the cluster. Also make sure you replace the clip when you reinsert the cable to the tranny. Just make sure the cable is seated properly on both ends.

After spending months without a speedometer, I decided to finally troubleshoot this problem.

I used a variable speed drill and hooked it up to the cable from the tranny. It spins the speedo needle to the Zero on the gauge but does not go past that point. It goes backwards to 140 o.k. Is the cluster toast?

I pulled the dash and checked the connection on the back of the speedo and it seems normal? Man, you have to have small hands to get in there to unplug and re-attach the cable and harnesses!

Is there an easier way to swap out the cluster without taking the whole dash apart? ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated.

I have a spare gauge cluster I am going to have to swap in at some point. I am going to have to swap the odometer as well. My car has over 200,xxx miles alraedy and the replacement cluster only has 118,xxx miles. I have to swap the odometer, right?

Thank you.

Sounds like speedo is OK, if you meant it goes to 140 OK when drill is is rev., or did you mean the speedo turns backwards to 140, and will only go to 0 in the proper direction?:hmm: If so, speedo is bad. 94

No, I meant it goes backwards to 140 mph but only goes to Zero during normal rotation.

Any tips on Changing the cluster?

Tips?
Once trim bezel is removed, and cluster mounting screws are removed it’s pretty much a plug and play setup, although unclipping the speedo cable can be a PITA because of lack of room.:sipread: 94

Once speedo cable has been removed, is it the same way for all of the wires plugged into the back of the cluster? Lack of room is tough!

No, just the speedo cable.:whisper: 94
