can i use this then take it in for paint?because i have a spots where there is metal showing.well it just crack off like in 2 months or so?Thanks
well if done properly, it should be fine. it’s called spot primering.
but the stuff in a can that you buy from any store is bad. i know a lot of people use it, but those people most of the time roll around with the whole car primered. it’ll shrink under the paint and you’ll see wrinkles on your paint a little after you get it sprayed.
Are you just looking to protect a few spots, or are preparing the whole car for paint yourself?
The quick answer to your question is this: It depends on the quality of finish you’re looking to achieve. The cheap spray-can primer will work okay, but don’t expect show-quality results, and it’s probably best not to leave it in primer very long. It tends to harden up after a while, which affects how well the paint adheres to the surface. I’ve used it before with decent results though. Quality primer will cover imperfections much better than the cheap stuff.
Also, the cheap stuff is not waterproof, so it won’t really protect bare metal on its own. Not for long anyway. It will eventually rust through. However, a quality primer/sealer, like PPG DP90, is waterproof, and I’ve read that it will survive without a topcoat for up to three years. But it also tends to harden and would need to be re-sanded before paint if it was left in primer for an extended period of time.
If you’re just looking to prevent rust from forming, you can just spray the spots and leave it to the body shop staff to properly prep the surface, which they should be doing anyway.
yea im just spot priming a metal area…
thanks for the replys.helped me out alot

thats the one im using.how much coats do i need to spray over it?thanks.im a newbie at this.sorry
I sprayed a bike gas tank with 3 coats of Duplicolor truck/SUV primer and a coat of Duplicolor truck/SUV primer sealer and two coats of the same brand paint and that stuff chipped off the edges with my thumbnail after curing for three weeks! I sanded it ALL off today and will be applying a real catalyzed primer and sealer this week.
I totally pissed at myself but there’s no self taught lesson worth learning that doesn’t cost money.
Ive had very good luck with the rust-tuff or whatever paint, I used to semi gloss black to paint my hood, replacement fender and roof panel (after proper prep of course) and it has turned out very well and is holding up to the intense UV rays of the desert well (this is just temp until I paint the car)
the flat black primer from wal-mart will work just fine.only cost $1 each.i use to have a ek coupe and prep-prime the whole car myself.took it to maaco and let dem resand and spray paint.paint turns out fresh no bubbles or nothing.paint look like it will last longtime for it to fade.the only thing that i had to worry about are rock chip that hit the front of the car.i had to use touch-up.
