ST vs. Progress Rear Sway Bar

If you had the choice between the two, which one would you go with if you were just buying the rear for now? Thanks

Rich,

I think that it may depend on whether you are doing the install yourself or not. If you get the Progress one plan on being under yor car for a good while. You may have to drill a hole where the lca pivots on each side and if you have ABS you will need even more patience. If you have after market exhaust you may run into clearance problems. My GFs car is getting its timing belt changed right now but if I get it back early enough I will post a couple of pics for you. The result is great and she and I love the feel of the Progress one.

Hmm don’t really feel like drilling. The difference between them is the mounting positions & 1 or 2 extra mm in diameter, right?

I believe the ST is 19mm and I know the Progress is 22mm. I have the Eibach (19mm) on my car and love it. Easy installation. It utilizes your stock endlinks. But I think they are on backorder status.

You’re just running a rear sway bar?

My GFs car has only the rear Progress (that’s all they make) I have both Eibachs, just haven’t installed the front yet.

what’s the stock size rear sway bar? an front bar size?

Is it worth getting front an rear or just rear?

I believe the stock rear bar on the LS is 14 mm.

why the difference in size between the two bars? can anyone give me an educated response to this? I know that progress is very active in motorsports and actually tests all their products on real world cars. so why should I get the ST vs Progress. don’t mind install, as long as I reap the better result.

A stiffer rear sway bar will reduce body roll and also encourage your car to oversteer, which is great for our understeering tegs. The 22 mm bar will cause more oversteer than the 19 mm one. Just a matter of preference I guess.

this page will tell you all you want to know and more about sway bars.

I’ve driven an Integra with the progress bar on an auto-x coarse and I thought it had a little too much oversteer.
My rear end must not be as loose as most peoples’ because I have No problem with understeer in my Integra. It does only have 83,000 mi on it though.
Also, FYI on the eibach bar. The reason they are hard to find is because they are redesigning it. They said the new one should be out in 5 or 6 months.

And if I remember correctly, the increase in stiffness is related by 4X inverse (don’t remember the actual formula but an explanation follows). In other words, if you increase the size of the bar 1mm, you increase the stiffness 4X.

A lot of SCCA guys I’ve talked to recommend removing the front sway bar, and adding the biggest rear bar I can find. Although, they aren’t necessarily suggesting this for the street.

Another thing to add, is adding a roll bar will effectively add spring rate. So if your springs are too soft, you can often add a much thicker bar to counter-act this. Although, this isn’t necessarily the correct way to fix it.

Big sway bars do cause a clearance issue with your exhaust, especially depending on the rest of your set-up. Once you lower your car, you effectively bring the entire suspension upwards. Since the exhaust has to go over the LCA and sway bar, you lose clearance between the two. While not fatal to the car, it can make some awful noises. I should know, I had my suspension made up before I lowered my car, and now I have about 1MM of clearance between my STOCK sway bar, and aftermarket exhaust. If any heavy load sits/rests in the back of my car, you can hear the exhaust rapping on the sway bar.

When your done reading and understanding why a larger bar. Consider a few facts about the two rear anti roll bars. The ST is 19 mm the Progress is 22mm. The Progress end links mount to the shock mounts further out board then the ST end links, which mounts to the LCA. This means the Progress bar will also have a mechanical leverage advantage over the ST bar. The ST bar’s mounting on the sub frame is plug and play, the Progress requires reinforcement, drilling or welding. The Progress bar has very tight relationships to the exhaust, subframe, ABS harness and LCA. There fore it will not be compatible with some aftermarket exhaust systems with out modification, many lower subframe tie bars and JDM LCA’s. The Progress bar will also restrict full suspension droop. You will be walking the dog in extended sweepers. I have used the 16mm auto, the ST and the Progress rear anti roll bar in extensive competition for a number of years. My experience has been the Progress bar will yield the best results if you are willing to work with its fitment peculiarities.

DB2-R81… Well stated!!!

I have actually heard that the progress rear sway bar is too big for our tegs. Its not big as in size, but I mean its too much for our cars and many might agree on the autox circuit. I’m going to wait until eibach comes out with there newere sway bars and wait for some comparisons of that and ST. I personally still want to get a ST bar over any of the others.

I am in the middle of installing the Progress bar right now. I have the stock bar off, and I’m going to do the new bar tommorrow. It doesn’t look easy. Also, I will not be able to weld the brackets to the frame becaue I have no welding tools. I guess I’ll have to take care of that before I go to the next autocross. I am running stock exhaust piping so that won’t be too much of a problem for now, and I’ll be getting a custom exhaust when I decide to spend money on that so I can work around the clearance space issue as well. However, the rear spring rates of the H&R Sports worries me. I fear that the sway bar will exert too much stress on the subframe becuase the springs are not resisting enough. The rates are (340/186). The brackets are very beefy though, pretty high quality stuff.

So I guess my next project is 375/375 Ground Controls.

Jonna: I finally got a torque wrench and floor jack. My god, things are so much easier.

Hey GSpeedR,

You don’t t need to weld the sub frame upper mounts, but do not use the included self taping sheet metal bolts that came with the bar.
This is what you do, unbolt the LCA pivot bolt and temporarily bolt the sub frame mounting bracket in place with the LCA pivot bolt. This will provide a template for marking the location of the upper sub frame mounting bolt hole. Use a centre punch to correctly mark the location and prevent your drill bit from wandering. Take the bracket off, pull the LCA out of the sub frame and double check the location on the inside of the sub frame. Drill the frame for the correct diameter bolt and with the LCA out of the sub frame and you will have room to slide a large diameter, heavy duty washer and nut on the inside of the sub frame, you may need to trim one edge of the washer on a grinder or use a file, to allow it to slip into the correct location. It is a tight squeeze but there is room, Put the lower pivot bolt on temporary to line the bracket up correctly, bolt the upper mount together and tighten it down. The sheet metal on the sub frame is not flat but it will flatten out when you tighten the bolt and nut together. From here the rest of the assembly is a piece of cake. For reference I am running 450 Eibach ERS springs in front and 500lbs in back, my car weighs in under 2400lbs. I still have some bottoming out in the front so I will be going to 500 in front and 650lbs in the rear. I ran at least 30 Solo I and II events this past year and put about 2500 miles on the street with this arrangement and had no problems. If you need any other help you know where to reach me!

So the self taping sheet metal bolts are the real weakness. That sounds like it’s going to occupy my entire day tommorrow.

I did send you an e-mail asking you to elaborate on the statements you made about the D brackets from another post.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

I’ll keep everyone posted on how bad I mess this up Haha.
