Started putting together my turbo build

My friend that took them is loading them onto a disk for today. Never fear, we they will be on here as soon as I even get to see them.

Still nobody else with any suggestions to make my car run right?

The pictures have finally arrived! Although the car still doesn’t run well, here’s some pics for everyone.

There’s a whole bunch of pics on my cardomain site that I don’t feel like loading them on here, so feel free to check them out on there and let me know what you think.

I dig the blacked-out piping/intercooler…I wanna see it when it’s behind the bumper, see how well it conceals it…

Just saw the pics on car domain, you can;t see the intercooler for NOTHING!!! Sweet sleeper man, hope you get it tuned soon to see what kind of power it puts down tuned…

The bumper hides the IC really well. It’s hard to see even when right up close to it.

Lol how does that IC clear your bumper metal rebar that goes across?

It doesn’t :giggle:

I cut out the bumper support, and only kept the end parts that actually bolt to the bumber cover and to the frame.

Lol that’s waht I thought but I wanted to just dbl check. Does the middle sag or anything? is it pretty weak if you push on the middle now? :stuck_out_tongue:

i just installed my FMIC too, and man, the metal is so thick it took me the day to cut it with a dremel !! now it fits great, but no air dam no more to cool the radiator…

I havent noticed any sagging at all, but then again I haven’t pushed on it either. I just don’t plan on hitting anything. The steel was pretty thick, but it just took me a few minutes with a sawzall and a grinding wheel.

Just did some more work tonight, and I finally got it to hold a full 10 psi. We pulled the wastegate actuator arm, and it had about 1/4" of play in it! So I adjusted that and what do you know, 10 psi.

Still a little sluggish and doesn’t build boost as early as it should, and misfires at high rpms, but the plugs are fouled pretty bad and need to be gapped down, and it isn’t tuned yet.

that’s kool… looks great…

any motor/turbo/manifold pictures?

did u get the piping & fmic black already? or did u paint it? and if you painted it, how did u do it? i heard that you’d have to take it to a radiator shop, and have them paint it with their paint that’s thin, strong, and doesnt chip…

10psi, slugish? LS? my old higher compression LS @ 6psi w/ bad rings & cracked ringlands all around, 3" 90 degree pipe right off the turbo to nothing, 2" ABS plastic piping, with a FMU, stock fuel pump & injectors was pretty un-slugish… hahaha… but then i guess that’s why it blew so easily…

I put a link in with my other pictures to my cardomain page which has a bunch of pictures of the mani, engine, electronics, and some other stuff.

The piping was aluminized steel, I just sanded it and painted it with high temp. flat black. I’m not too concerned whether it chips or not, just want it to look decent and stay protected.

As far as being sluggish, the car isnt’ tuned at all. We eyeballed a basemap for it, and I know for a fact that it’s running very rich with way less timing than it should for optimal power. But this was just to get it running until I can get the wideband on it this week. It should be getting full boost around 3500, but it isn’t getting it until a bit after that. The plugs are shot from driving it so rich for the past couple weeks, so I’m getting some new colder ones and gapping them down to stop the misfires up top. And my exhaust consists of the stock DSM 90* bend off of the turbo…and that’s it.

I think thats the johnny racecar intercooler, they come anodized.

Sorry, I didnt see that you asked about the intercooler too. But I just sprayed it with the same high temp. black.

Did some tuning on the car today with the wideband. We got the fuel down to pretty much where we want it, timing still needs some work. I’m getting some misfiring when in full boost over 5000rpms. It was alot worse, but I got new plugs and gapped them down to .032, and that helped alot.

Do you think I should gap them down smaller and see if that will help any? If not, what else could solve this for me?

I’m supposed to be going to the strip tomorrow night, so I want to get it ready to run well.

You sure its misfiring?

Gap them down to .030 or .028 and you are running 2 step colder plugs?

If you are still misfiring at a relatively low boost level…you may have ignition problems elsewhere

They are stock plugs, and gapped to .032. I’m gonna try gapping them down to .028 today and see what happens, and also get a timing light on it. I marked the distributor last time I had it off, but I guess there’s still a possibility that the timing is off.

Today I gapped the plugs down to .028, and no misfires up top. The idle stumbles a bit, but no big deal :burnout:

Back from the dead…

Any updates? how is she running etc… Need details

Well…I finally got the oil leak to stop for the most part, but then as soon as I did that the wastegate actuator died. Wouldn’t hold more than 2 psi at redline. So I got a new one and got that put in this week. And right now I’m in the process of finally building an exhaust. Should be out of the garage tonight. I have the downpipe done, which is the difficult part of it.

I’m also sorting out issues with the J&S Safegaurd. It doesn’t seem to be functioning, so we haven’t touched any timing on it. The fuel is all tuned, but once I get the timing figured out there will be alot more power to be found.

And I have a new GM 3 bar MAP sensor on the way, so I’ll have to retune after that anyways.

Car felt really good though for the day or two that it ran with 10 psi.
