Hey all, my DA9 recently developped a starting problem. When I try to start it, the engine cranks but doesn’t catch. I removed the distributor cap and the rotor was charred, and the coil? looked as if it had exploded!
I ordered a new distributor from Distributor-King, and installed in on Saturday, but my car still does not start. Things I have checked:
With the key on the 2nd click, the fuel pump primes and when it finishes priming, the engine lights goes off and the relay clicks.
Car has fuel, added 3L just in case it was out. It had only done 411km on the tank anyway…
I have spark in cylinders 1 and 2, didn’t check 3 or 4. I tested this with a screwdriver, so I don’t actually know if my plugs are bad. The plugs and leads were replaced about 4 months ago, though.
Also checked the under-hood fuses and the starter fuse under the dash.
Okayy common problem people do… You deffinately needed a new distributor.but when u replaced it u sure u put the key that goes into the cam correctly??? Its probably 180 degrees out…pull the distributor back off and turn the key 180degrees and put it back in the cam…see if that works first…bcz u know u have fuel n spark but the spark is probably not firing correctly …
I KNOE THIS BCZ I BOUGHT AN AFTERMARKET DISTRIBUTOR AND I PUT IT IN THE CAM THE WRONG WAY
Thanks for the reply! I just had a look, and it seems that I cannot actually fit the distributor if the key is turned 180 degrees.
Anyway, I had a look at my spark plugs, and 1, 3 and 4 were fairly oily. 3 had oil in the gap! Looks like I need new spark plug gaskets. I tried to start it after cleaning the plugs, but again it didn’t start. This time, though, the CEL came on, and read code 15. I put my hand on the distributor afterwards, and it was quite warm, is it meant to become warm to the touch after only 5 or so cranks?
hmmmmm…noo its not suppose to be warmm or hottt unlesss ur driving for a whilee the engine heat transfers to the distributor… check youur distributor harnesses make sure there plugged in right…code 15 is your ignitor i believe which is inside your distributorr
FYI some aftermarket distributors can be inserted anyway…so thats how i put mine in the wrong way.
the distributor only goes on one way. how you mangaed to put one on that was 180 degrees off baffles me.
I would get in there and double check the wiring on that ignitor.
def sounds like a diz problem if you threw an igniter code and arent throwing anything else, Crank position or knock sensor lol. double check the diz inside and out, double check your firing order, silly as it sounds, people do it all the time.
Okay, still haven’t fixed the issue. However, ever since taking the new distributor off and checking the wires, I’m no longer getting spark. Very weird; I’m pretty sure the wires are on correctly.
I put the ignitor from my old distributor into the new distributor-king one, but am still getting no spark. However, the CEL is gone. I’m starting to think it isn’t the distributor…

I purchased a distributor from distributor king when I first bought my current teg. and had this same problem. I contacted them and they had a new one on the way promptly before I even shipped the other back. give them a call or email them and see what they say
that would mean that the cam is aftermarket then. how did you get the distributor on then if the tab and slot dont line up(__ --), how are they supposed to not only join together but spin on the same axis…

Thanks so much man! I just send them an email; lets see what they say!
Okay. I sent the distributor back to Distributor King, cost me $77! Anyway, while they’re doing their thing, I bought a used distributor off this other guy. He said it’s a working distributor and I have no reason to doubt him, but yet my car still gives code 15 and refuses to start.
Time to do some more research on what it could be…
Ive been playing around with it, trying to see if I can pinpoint certain reasons or situations that set it off. and if I stay off the throtle. I could probly go all day would out it coming on but as soon as you get on it. there it is!!. gonna get in there and check the connections and components in the distributor.
In the meantime… My original distributor had a wire spliced into the blue one from the 2P connector, presumably going to/from the alarm. I didn’t connect that on my new distributors as I didn’t think it would prevent my car from starting, but I’m going to try splicing it into the new distributor wire and see if it works.
Failing that, I think I’m going to try a new (used) ECU…
