I don’t know much about steering columns but mine started moving up and down, kinda like if the tilt was unlocked.
Solved: couldn’t find this online so maybe someone can use this. It turned out that #4 in the diagram is actually 2 parts pushed together, there is a grey one and a black one which had slid up and was hard to see, they were both cracked but i changed the clock of them and re-torqued them and it’s like new, I’ll have to find some replacements when I can. I’m sure these cracked from not having a power steering belt, i’ll loop the lines to make it easier on the column in the future.
Found similar pic, #4 is slightly cracked but doesn’t appear that bad, #3 is what bolts over it, it seems like there may have been some bushing between 4 and 3 to make it tight but all I have to go on is a ton of rubber shavings in the column cover and a tiny piece of black rubber with grooves on it still intact.
right around where the tilt mechanism (which appears tight) there is a U type clamp (not joint) that appears to hold the column tight.
Inside of this clamp there is a grey cylinder like plastic piece like bushing/sleeve around the column which is cracked (4), also some pieces of rotted black rubber seem to have fallen out.
I’m having difficulty finding the name of these parts for replacement. Anyone ever resolve this this issue before? I’m thinking the rubber was just wraped around this plastic and torqued, so maybe I should just wrap some random rubber around it if I can’t find the part.
