steering wheel shakes at highway speeds

hey guys i spun out in the snow last night on accident and now when i approach 60 my steering wheel and i think my car shakes slighty. what could it be?. do i need an aligment or what? thanks

it could be a couple of things, you way have your alignment out, which is probably what you are thinking and it probably is.

but the other night my car was shking bad at any speed over 80 km/h, it was because some snow/ice froze to the inside of the rim, acting like a huge wheel weight it threw my wheel balance way off. simply park your car indoors for a few hours, or painstakingly crawl underneath and grab it by hand.

What it also could be is one of your front tires has a bulge in it. What I mean by that is there’s a bump in one of the tires and it makes the shaking when you’re driving. It happened to me so I replaces my tires.

check alignment, tire pressure, balance, and bubbles. If those all check out perfect it could also be the road your driving on has an uneven surface and you feel that through your wheel. HTH

is there any way i can check the alignment myself??

Most likely it is your wheel alignment. I don’t think you can check it yourself unless you have the equipment. Better get it checked out, better than spinning out on the highway again.

don’t drive your car in the snow, whats wrong with you. Do you know what salt does to your ride?

jus to let all of you know vibration is NOT cause by a bad alignment… a bad alignment will cause abnormal tire wear OR a pulling or drifting condition when driving. if your feeling a vibration is will either be a bent wheel, wheel weights fell off during spin, out of round tire, your tires are flatspotted (usually occours on cars with out ABS (tire locks up and slides on one section of tire making it flat), some sort of material is sticking to the inside of the wheel (IE: ICE,MUD,etc,) take your front wheels off and clean the inside of them and the rest of the suspension while your at it… while thier off check for a tire seperation,( tire is deformed, usually on tread section). put them back on and see if it does it again, if it still does it take it to a tire shop and have them check the tires for an “out of round condition” and check the balance… probly jus need to balance them again i would guess… i know this cause i do tires and alignments all day at werk hahah…

btw you can check the alignment your self if you had the correct measurements BEFORE you spun out… nascar uses it too… its called a piece of string… it’s cut to a specific length to measure the toe angle during races when drivers have a controll problem with the car during green flag laps…

Did you hit anything when you spun, or did you just slide?

i just slid into the mud i went to the self car wash and sprayed it down good and it seemed to help somewhat i have had a slight pull to the right for a while so when i get my rims in before i put them on i will take it to a shop and have the alignment checked and everything thanks for your help guys

your problem is most likely balancing

my wheel used to shake pretty bad between 60-70, but once i got my tires balanced it stopped.
