I have a question that has never been told (that I know of)
Ok so Im putting together a stock b20b block with a stock b16 head
Now here’s my question.
Vtec usually kicks in around 5500. Would it be ok and useful to take it to 7k? since the block is stock
I would have 1500 in vtec,
I have the high compression one that revs to 6700 and I dont want the block to get damaged
Keep the stock redline of the b20 because it can’t handle the revs. Over-revving the motor will cause undue stress on the rod-bolts/bearings/main-bolts and everything else.
I wouldn’t even push that b20 to red line personally. B20s feel like they aren’t making any more power past 6000k anyways, they have good torque so I don’t see any reason to stress it all way to redline.
Of course this is just how I feel about my B20, but mine is just B20B also.
Honestly it’s hit or miss. People all the time have this argument about how much you should or shouldn’t rev a b20Vtec. Over the years I have seen many hold and many not hold. Just decide for yourself if your willing to take the risk.

That’s the point of putting a vtec head on, better performance on the top end. Of course a stock b20 doesn’t make power at/past stock redline.
You will still have the weaker bottom end tho, which I believe is the main reason people say they should be reved high. But like 1slw4dr said…it’s hit or miss. I remember the first kid I knew to have b20vtec like 8 years ago and he beat the ever living hell out of that thing with no issues. Of course now I cant remember if it had a built bottom end or not, I doubt it at that time.
I’d imagine if you’re putting this together correctly and not just throwing shit together without replacing the necessary parts, you shouldn’t have any issues.
mine b20z2 bottom end has held a 8.5k rev limit vtec set at 5 been running a year like that have had no issues still runs strong. bottom end was freshly rebuilt july of last year and head was a b16 with type r valve train. like they said some hold others dont.
