stock muffler recommendations

So I need a new muffler only for my 90 GS and I’m wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences?

I do NOT want a canister muffler or a custom exhaust, just a good quality OEM replacement. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

buy stock?

I got an OEM replacement from NAPA. It sounds different – although perhaps I got used to the lower tone of the exhaust with several holes in it. I had the shop put on a new tip that I purchased because I didn’t want the round tips anymore. It’s been working fine. I’ve had it for about 6 months now.

Thanks Neil

I bought a bosal from partsgeek.com
ran like 100 with shipping, had to bend one of the hangers a bit because it got bent in shipping but it fit just like oem and had the dual tips as well if you wanted to re-use the chrome tips that the stock seems to have.
I painted it black, helped with the looks and seems to be keeping the rust away.

^^ $91 and 95$ shipped.
just make sure you get the right one, think the 2 listed are different because one is auto transmission and one is manual.

Thanks Malformed, that’s some good info there. I already grabbed one from a local parts store and its getting installed now but, its good to have that info out there in case someone needs one in the future.

Great find! How do you know which is auto or manual?

email and ask, google… double check other sites, cross reference.
should shop around for the best price anyway.
may even want to consider a stainless steel vs the aluminized steel.

I really don’t know, I just know there were multiple part numbers for my 92 LS based on auto vs manual and for the 90 GS im seeing 2 bosal listed on partsgeek and neither specify. other sites specify, and other sites may be cheaper.
at the time MY best deal was found on partsgeek.

far as Bosal part numbers, I checked the catalog https://www.qcsonline.net/bosalb2b/products/
278-469 is 90-91 A/T
278-465 is 90-91 M/T
92-93 are different and some are different between sub models.

Just FYI to anyone on the future…these Bosal mufflers are ALMOST fully bolt on, the one I got doesn’t have a driver side hanger. Other than that it’s all good. Might need a little bit of tweaking to fit perfect, but that’s expected.

I also bought the Bosal cat from the same website. Very pleased with it. Fully bolt on, however getting those old bolts off the studs on the rear side of stock cat was not happening so I has to cut them off and use new bolts on the rear side. Other than that, no issues.
