Strange noise from Transmission(?)

As it usually goes when your working on older cars, you fix one thing to find out something else is wrong. Finally got the engine running correctly(minus the IACV), and now I’m getting this strange “grinding” noise coming from the right front. I haven’t really found a pattern in it, the closest thing I have found to a pattern is everything is quiet when I first start going, once I first use the gears to slow down it will start making this noise, but its not constant. First thing I thought was just low on fluid, which was right, but still doesn’t fix the problem. At higher speeds it don’t seem to do it much at all, will just make a slight noise when I hit a bump. It kind of makes me think something is rolling around loose in the transmission, but how common is that with these transmissions?(90 B18A1)

Alright, I think I might have it figured out…seems the right axle keeps trying to come out just a little bit. Figured I would try to pop the axle out and shove it back in and the noise went away…then I got a little on the gas and I think it did it again. Any tips here?

How old is the axles? If u look at the boot of the axles and if they look very worn or rusted dry out i believe replacing them are good and its fairly cheap at napa new for 79.99 each i think.

As far as the grinding sound goes try checking the cover that goes on the tranny under the car to see if its dented in making the flywheel grinding it.

If you circle clip on the axle spline end that snaps into the trans isn’t large enough in dia, it can cause some funny intermittant noises. Did the axle pop in and out with little resistance? Might want to get a new one of the circlips or spread the one you have.
:whisper:

Can’t afford new axles right now, especially since the joints are still good in it.

Might have to pop the right one all the way out and check the circlip on it…didn’t even think about it. It didn’t pop out super easy when I popped it out, but it did slide right back in a lot easier than any I have done.
