went to go pull the head off today and there where a couple of strip bolts i try and try to get them off but could not do it does n e one know what the beast way to get hter off?
I’m confused. Did you strip the threads of the bolt, as in broke the threads on the inside of the bolt holes on the motor?
Or did you round the bolt head off with say a 12 point shitty chinese socket set. The 14mm bolt head?
the head bolt was strip already i did not do it i try and try to get the damn thing off and the head bolt is round off
let me say it again. So the 6 point hex actual head of the cylinder head bolt is rounded off?
Yeah, you’re kind of screwed. Get a high quality 6 point socket and see if it will take it off. Otherwise you probably need to consider using a rounded bolt removal tool/kit. Take every other bolt off first.
Good luck
ya the 6 point hex bolt is round off will i will try will it warp the head by takein the other off first
All the v8s I’ve done I never cared about the reverse order or the warping. I’ve pulled the head off and not cared before and everything seemed to be in check.
You really don’t have much of a choice anymore. Last time I got a head shaved it was like $20-30 at the machine shop.
well i dunno i dont want to warp the head this is the only car i got and i dont want to fuck it up
craftsman has a socket for rounded bolts. i forget what its called but sears will point you to the spot, it works wonders, i bought a b18c1 once that had 4 rounded bolts. i used a snap on one but craftsman has the same thing, took it right off use steady even pressure.
alright thanks i will go look later
or you can always use a file or sander to make two sides of the bolt flat so you can use a plier to unscrew it… works for me… hope this helps…
vice clamps won’t work for that many pounds of pressure. I suggested the craftsman damaged bolt removal kit already. I think it was $20-40
be glad its not a vtec like mine was, the bolts are rescessed down into the head you cant see to luch of what going on. if it didnt work we were going to presision drill the head off the bolt. but the removal tool grabbed it just enough
Home Depot also sells those reverse screw drill bit where you just drill a lil hole into the broken/rounded screw head then tap the reverse drill bit into the broekn head with a hammer then you can screw it out… hope this helps
Is this what you guys are talking about: Craftsman Bolt-Out 13-Piece Set , Craftsman Bolt-Out 5-Piece Set I think that you should try the bolt-out first and not the screw extractors that you need to drill a hole into the head of the bolt. If you break a screw extractor off in the bolt, then your options on fixing this get very expensive.
BTW: you should not take off any other head bolts until you get the damaged one off first.
Another way I take out rounded screw heads is to get a dremel and dremel a groove ontop of the screw making it a flathead screw then just get a flathead screwdriver and try to unscrew it OR slightly tilt your flathead and tap it gently with a hammer to get the screw unstuck… hope this helps… good luck!
ya but remember these are head bolts, and if the motor was ever overheated or anything. you talking almost 100 ftlbs to get them off. on a b16 i rebuilt a few years ago i had to use a breaker bar with a pipe to get them loose. amazingly the threads and everythign were in perfect shape. they were just super tight
first, don’t loosen the other bolts, if you do it’ll put more pressure on the stripped one, keep all the others torqued down. those extractor sockets aren’t bad but don’t always work. try a slightly smaller high quality socket and beat it on the stripped head with a hammer. that’ll work most of the time or if you have an impact driver those are awesome. hth
thanks guys
keep us posted how it goes.
I was having same problem with a head bolt, went to Sears and bought the Craftsman smallest bolt-out set with a 1/2" drive for $20 & at first used the 14mm (I think?) “#8” size 'til it rounded it even more, feeling hopeless, I put the smaller “#7” size on there & beat it down onto the bolt with a hammer & extension on the socket then had someone use a pipe to pry the ratchet while I held it straight and it broke loose just as easy as the rest did normally. A good investment for $20 in my opinion.
