i have a stripped bolt on my thermostat housing and i have no clue how to go about this one…any ideas? im not trying to extract, too small of area.
…what do you have to take off to get to the thermostat housing? how does it come off the water pump inlet pipe? do i need to take the head off?
to get to the housing all you need to take off is the upper radiator hose. and have you tried using the striped bolt sockets made by irwin?
The upper radiator hose connects straight to the head via a water inlet.
If he’s talking about the thermostat housing, he needs to remove the lower radiator hose. The entire housing is bolted to the motor by two bolts, they’re pretty long. Then you have to pry the housing off of the inlet tube/pipe. It would be wise to replace the o-ring on the inlet tube, since you’re there.
Parts #12/13 show the two bolts that connect the housing to the motor.
sorry about that. the lower hose is what i meant. and i thought he was talking about the bolts on #8…
I interpreted his statement as him wanting to remove the “housing” due to the inlet (#8) bolts being stripped. :-/ dunno why it struck me that way.
But yeah the easiest way to clear up space in that area is to remove the intake pipe, the lower radiator hose and possibly unplugging any misc things blocking your view. As mentioned, you’re probably going to need a socket that’s designed to remove stripped bolts.
helocoil always works really good bud. good luck, pm me if you need to know how to do it. the kit can kinda get expensive though
^^i don’t think he was talking about the threads
once the entire housing is out it’s easy. just weld a nut to the head of the bolt. scuff the head real good, as the cleaner the metal, the stronger the weld. then just fill a pool in the center of the nut. will work like a charm
True that. Doing it in-car, a socket would definitely be needed. Out of the car, weld + nut = win!
Get some pb blaster…hammer a one size smaller socket onto it then ratchet it off…i do it all the time just make sure u have a replacement bolt haha
i got it off. dont want to do that agian. but it was a bolt on the thermostat housing cover (#8). i was trying to change my thermostat and ran into this problem. im guessing the person who owned it before me tried changing the thermostat and FAILED!!! for all i know that was the reason they sold it.lol
