I picked up this '92 GS for $700 in September from a friend for use as a winter beater. In Nov I ended up receiving a B16A SiRII motor and an LSD equipped Y1 which is currently in the process of being installed:) My plan is for this to be my DD, but also be used for autoX. Im currently debating on whether I should fix the rust on it or just drive it till I find another body in good condition but as of right now itll be left alone minus the rust around the windshield on the pillars as thats an easy fix, my main issue of rust is a semi missing lower rear quarter on the passenger side.
When I first picked her up:
Out with the old and in with the new(sort of)…
B18A1 pulled
B16A w/ Y1 ready to be installed
I will be uploading more pictures once the install is finished:)
Well I finally have the engine installed and somewhat hooked up. I forgot to take pictures, but I will get them on tomorrow when I’m at the shop working on it. If everything keeps going smoothly then I should have it back up and running tomorrow, then after that I will take some time to attack the surface rust around the windshield and hopefully fix the spoiler thats seperating until I pick up another spoiler.
As of right now to finish the swap all I have left to install is:
Install Shifter bars
Install Exhaust manifold and midpipe
Hook up a couple vac lines and fuel filter line
Install clutch cable
Install rad
Engine/Trans oil change
Hook up VTEC wires to ECU
Fix bumper (horn was installed in the wrong place by last owner and pushes on the bumper)
No after work today I will hopefully have it Running, but I’m also working on trying to figure out what’s going on with my heater. (Posted in the Interior section )
Well I managed to get pretty much everything done until I got kicked out because the auto club was closing…
All I have left to do is install the hood, trans inspection cover, battery, engine & trans oil, coolant and then wire up VTEC(which I could’ve done without being at the club) but I guess I gotta wait till Tues since its closed till then, and hopefully they won’t make me pay for it being there since they’re typically open on weekends.
Thanks to the long weekend we just had I couldnt work on the car after Thurs night until yesterday. But I managed to get the car is running, but had to leave it at the shop as I still have a few things left to do.
do you have any plans to put that b16 head on the LS block in the future?
No I won’t be going LS/Vtec, if I’m going to build a 1.8 vtec it’ll be a block designed for it. But I’m not building this car to go fast in a 1/4mile, so the displacement doesn’t do anything for me.
Glad to hear man! Enjoy the car!
I finally got the car running and out of the shop. Took a little drive around a few blocks but its VERY foggy and so far I’m enjoying it.
I do still have a few things I need to solve such as:
Idle issue (all over the place lol) I can explain in another post if anyone is interested…
Fix rusted A-pillars (few holes, which I need to fix!)
Wiring the VTEC wires into the ECU
Pull the bumper so I can move the horn from behind the passenger bumper turn light (horn wont allow the turn signal to go in properly)
Remove the power steering pump (currently have the belt removed and the pump held up by coat hanger wire. Found out the top mount on the head is different between a B18A1 and a B16A LOL) but I plan on doing a PS loop this weekend if I can figure out what to do with the pump and pump lines
Check why my 5th gear grinds over 50KM/H (33MPH) and its just 5th gear causing this issue (possible synchro)
Adjust headlights (beams cross eachother LOL)
Here is a crappy cell picture of the engine (Sorry was late and I didnt have my camera with me)
Well I have gotten around to fixing a few of the issues Ive been having such as:
Idle issue (ECU related due to having a B18A1 ECU until I wired in the VTEC)
Hooked up the VTEC wires and installed my P28 w/ modified P30 tune
Found out why I cant change my heater vents (Previous owner installed a 3 wire heater motor controller, which I will be replacing this weekend when I pick up a new controller)
Found out the 5th gear grind issue actually is my synchro’s, but I will be changing the trans fluid and getting Synchromesh to hopefully help this issue as I’ve heard many people that use it helps them.
Adjusted the headlights so that the beams dont cross eachother, still need to work on the foglights as I just found out they’re aimed high.
But on a good note I found out this car is a LOT faster then the B18A1 by a long shot, not sure if its because just the swap or that my custom tune is also helping the difference. Having the proper ECU also made a huge difference in the gas mileage as I’m no longer getting only 250km to a tank and now managed to get 50km with the needle not even moving slightly.
During the swap I found out just how bad the rust on this body actually is (I will be uploading pictures tomorrow so everyone can see) I’m currently in the process of figuring out if I should try to fix all the badly rusted area’s or if I should get better condition body. I’d prefer to fix it after all the work I’ve already done but that’s a lot of time and money to fix as you will all see once I upload the pictures. The pillars for the windshield have a bunch of rust and there’s actually some holes that allow water to enter the cabin and the rear quarter panel on the passenger side has a HUGE chunk missing out of the outside panel and it looks like it might be eating away at the inner panel as well but other then that the other rust is all easy to fix and mostly all surface rust.
Found out today when I was changing the spark plugs that the engine had the wrong plugs:/ lol it had NGK bkr5egp and its supposed to have bkr6egp, not sure if that was due to it being turbocharged or the previous owner was just an idiot. But now I’m not having flame out issues at high rpm and the car actually warms up quicker.
Still in the process of tracking down the proper heater motor controller so that I can change the vents around instead of only having it in the windshield.
Also my muffler feel off due to the strap and pipe clamp being rusted out, so I will be installing my other exhaust on soon.
Well as I said, I got a better picture of the swap inside the engine bay.
Now for one of the parts that is killing me with this car and is one of the main reasons I’m debating on keeping this body, besides the rear quarter rotting out.
Both sides of the windshield look like this:
Whenever the snow melts or I have water in my car and it goes into this whole, it enters inside the cabin on the passenger side and rests on the floor.
Well if you want some power side mirrors, I have two black ones that work. Apparently the base plate for them is slightly smaller on 90-91’s than the 92-93’s.
The only thing I actually need is the mirror glass on the passenger side.
Also managed to pick up 4 new speakers and trunk struts at Pick n Pull today, 2 Clarion and 2 Alpine. Tried to pick up other things I needed but most of them were gutted already:(
