Stupid c clip

ok so i had my trans apart and put back together all except that darn c clip
it just doesnt want to clip in around the bearing
so my question is is it needed or can i get away with it not clipped in
depending on answers second ? is if needed what would cause it not to clip in and how would one get it to clip in

Yes, it is absolutely needed.

Either try to push up on the input shaft (from the clutch-disc side) while holding the c-clip open.

Or, turn the case upside down and gently rock/shake the case and see if the weight of the mainshaft will make the clip seat itself.

tried both and didnt work tried with the oem one and replacement one so that got me thinking could that bearing be pressed down to far or did i mess up somewhere putting it together that could cause a slight alignment issue
also what does that c clip do

The clip holds the mainshaft in the correct position for all of the gears to line up with it’s corresponding countergears, without it your mainshaft will want to move towards the bellhousing when you place load on it causing all of the gears to mis-align and grind together.

My method is to get someone to hold the clip open with some angled needle nose pliers while you close it (assuming the bellhousing is facing down). When the tranny housing and the bellhousing closes, the clip should be held open by the width of the shaft, but will not snap into place. Flip the tranny upside down (bellhousing facing up) and shake it vigorously. This will force the mainshaft to move towards the tranny housing and the pin should just snap into place.

Kinda like I said :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s the only way I could get my cable-trans c-clip to seat.

On the hydro ones I’ve played with, they seem to seat easier… without having to turn them upside down etc.

took it apart again to try the methods above and still will not clip in. clip is held open by width of the bearing but can not move down any further and shaft will not move up
edit: so i think i have found the problem that shaft isnt supposed to be pratically riding on top of the ring gear i think that shaft is supposed to sit alittle higher which would allow the c clip to clip in (this is all theory here as this is the first time a cracked open a tranny), does this sound right

ummm, I think I understand what you are saying. So you are able to get the clip to be held open by the width of the shaft? If so, then just put in a few of the casing bolts, flip the case over (bellhousing up) and give it a good shake. Some people have more luck dropping the entire tranny from a few inches off the ground onto some plywood. I don’t recommend this way though.

At 4:50 and 6:38 mark, he goes over how to get the snap ring into place.
