Currently I have a Pioneer DEH P-4100, Alpine 1629S up front and some Sony 3-way in the back.
It sounds decent up to about 20 out of 30, but then it starts to get distorted. I’m thinking that’s b/c I don’t have an amp, or would better speakers take care of that?
If I add an amp, then I think I’ll add a sub. I don’t want to give up much of my space in the hatch, so I was thinking a 10 inch sub. I don’t want to put a lot of money into the system. I was thinking maybe $300. Would it even be worth it to buy something in that price range?
Can you give me any suggestions on amps, subs, boxes?
Hey i just put in a 125$ Jl 8" sub in a box with a DHD 450 watt amp and it knocks as hard as two 10s it sound perfect inside and you dun’t hear that much outside
You’re speakers could be blown. To check, push up and down on the cone. If you hear scratching or feel any roughness when you push down, they’re blown. If they’re not blow, the speakers just suck (coughsonycough)
Is your price range $300 for new speakers, a amp for the speakers, a sub, a sub amp, an enclosure, and wire? If, so I wouldn’t bother at all unless you add about $200 to that. If the $300 is for just a sub,sub amp, enclosure, and wire than I reccomend:
20 out of 30? that’s almost 3/4 of the maximum volume level. you dont want to have to turn it up that high because at that level there’s a lot of distortion and some of which you cant hear because the music drowns it out. any time there’s distortion, you’re damaging your speakers so the longer you listen to it at the level, the sooner the speaker will blow. by adding an amp, you’re giving the speaker more power so you dont have to turn the volume up that high to achieve the same loudness.
what i recommend is using two amps. one for the front and rear (something along the line of 40w x 4). then a mono sub amp with an output of 100w -150w for the single sub. if you prefer, you can try and find an amp with 5 channels (4 for front & rear and 1 for the sub). if you’re on a low budget, try looking for used stuff. sometimes you can find some good stuff at great prices.
I rarely turn my volume past 15. Around 20 or so is when it starts to get distorted. I was pretty sure it was b/c I don’t have an amp, but I was just wondering if better speakers would help the situation.
Now I have to save for a clutch, so I will have to put the sub and amp on hold.
Also, whenever I do get an amp, will the wires in the doors be able to handle more power? Or should I run new wire? Probably the max I would put to the speakers in the doors would be around 40 watts. Are Profile amps worth buying? They are so cheap, and you get what you pay for.
as for the stock wires, get new ones if you’re getting an amp. something like 14 or 16 gauge would be fine. for the sub, 12 gauge.
profile amps are ok for the money. i had one go out on me before but that’s probably because i was running it at 2ohms bridge which the amp surely can’t handle. their power ratings seem a bit over rated but i think they’re comparable to like Jensen and those other lower brands but above the crap like Boss, Pyramid, ect…i recommend looking at the JBL power series amp. i read a few reviews and heard nothing but good experiences with them and for the money, they can’t be beat. their power ratings are also under rated too. i’m looking to get two of them…the 300.1 (300w x 1 @2ohms) for my subs and the 80.4 (40w x 4) for my front and rears for under $300.
Yah, defintally check out JBL. I’ve had a JBL 1200.1, 180.2, and a 80.2. They have all treated me very well. They are clean and pretty underrated too. Definatelly the best amps for the price.
You can also check out US acoustics. They are actually very clean and a little underrated. They have VERY resonable prices too.
Profile’s are allright. They are way overrated, but like 91 integls said, they aren’t along the same line as pyramid.
Boss is actually pretty decent for the really low end stuff like that and is on the same platform as profile if you can stand the gay plexi and neons thay always have. You can also check out Lanzar amps wich are the same thing as boss. I’d choose boss and lanzar over kenwood and sony’s lower to mid lines any day.

Good luck! [/B]
ditto to the jbl class d amps. ive heard the 1200.1 and i have the 600.1, great output for the money. i havent heard their a/b ones, but im sure theyre decent.
aside from us acoustics the rest i wouldnt give to my worst enemy. theyre the lowest of the low, the cream of the crap, the laughing stock. maybe for 15bucks id throw them in the back to run the rears. mine dont need much more than 20w or so anyways…
wow boss over kenwood/sony? they all are weak as far as amps but i would think kenwood/sony would have a few more reliable components just out of reputation.
i hear the only good thing out of lanzar was the 1200d which still got mixed reviews as far as reliability. i was very close to trying one but found the jbls for a good price so went with them instead. the best bang for the buck indeed, if yours didnt die that is.
