hey everybody,
is it hard to make your own sub box? what all is required in making one and how precise does it have to be? im probably getting 2 cerwin vega HED 12" DVC subs and with all that room athat they require im wondering if they are oging to fit in the nook of the teg trunk…
There are books on the subject, and tools to help you calculate the proper size (try a Google search for WinISD Pro). However, if you are not confident in your carpentry skills, you might want to just consider a prefab box, or paying someone to make one.
www.sounddomain.com and www.caraudioforum.com are going to be a lot better places to learn about box fabrication.
If you’re just making a simple box… then its just that, simple and easy. But obviously if you’re not too good at working with your hands or at fabrication in general then you’re not going to want to make your own.
Not that hard depending on how complex you need the box to be… if you can handle some power tools and work with wood then you should have no problems. Wear a mask, MDF is toxic. Precision?.. All joints of the box have to be completely air tight, even if you are building a ported or bandpass configuration cause you don’t want air leaking anywhere it’s not supposed to. So take your time when cutting so your joints will be flush, small gaps can be filled with wood glue and/or silicone.
Make sure you predrill every hole, MDF splits easily.
with the time and effort it takes to make a sub box its more wothwhile to go and buy a prefabricated one…
when i wanted one for my sterio, it wored out that the time it took me to make the box, i could have been at work working the same hours and got paid more than enough for a prefab…
Prefabs are ok, maybe even good for some subs, but every sub is different and requires different air space, application will also alter the design.

Exactly.
I figuired that going to home depot and getting MDF, cutting it, nailing it, gluing it, covering with carpets would take more time and opportunity cost than buying it from ebay for $30.00.
So after calculating the suitable volume, I just bought one from ebay. worked out just fine.
Took me 20min. vs. 3~4 hours it would’ve taken for the whole project.

but you can easily change the volume of prefab boxes. Just make sure the box you buy is a little larger than you need. Then add wood to take up space. For instance you can screw a piece of 2x4 to the inside of your box. Just add whatever amount needed to reduce the volume to spec.
For most people its more worthwhile to just work and buy a box. Not only will it probably cost the same, but it will most likely look better. But you do have to settle for having something that might not be the exact dimensions you want and having something that you didn’t make (personally i’m a nut about fabrication ). The above doesn’t really work out the same for more form fix boxes though. If you’re planning on building a fiberglass box, something like a spare tire well box, chances are you can do it cheaper than a stereo shop would charge. Depending on how good you are with your hands it may or may not look as good though.
thanks guys
Building boxes is cake but if u don’t trust yourself just go buy a box from a sterio store.
and if you cant spell stereo correctly then you should stay away from fiberglass and sharp objects
ok … ist thing DO NOT USE A PREFAB unless you reseal it and reinforce the corners with fiberglass and resin…
Now what do you want to do with this sub just a little bump OR do you wana make your chest get compressed.
If you want BIG or even decent bass upgrade your electrical system ( big 3 upgrade) and dont use a stupid cap get a AGM power cell as a second batt and upgrade to a IRAGGI or POWERMASTER 180-200 amp.
now for a little bump i would still do the Big 3 upgrade but the stock alt and and your single main batt would be fine.
REMEMBER YOU WILL ONLY GET OUT OF YOUR AUDIO WHAT YOU PUT IN TAKE YOUR TIME AND DO IT RIGHT…
IF YOU HALF-ASS IT YOU WONT BE DOING NOTHING AND PEOPLE WILL LAUGH AT YOU … :gayfight:
