I bought a set of mugen style fiberglass side skirts, and I’m having trouble with the door scraping on the side skirt. To clarify, the lip of the side skirt that tucks into the bottom door jamb is binding on the door.
I know quite a few of you guys have these sides, did you grind down the lip to make it thinner? I’ve already done this and mounted the skirt with 3 screws installed and it has better clearance with the door than before, but it still needs more clearance considering the sides will be painted.
Suggestions? TIA
I’ll get some pics up here probably tomorrow for reference…
I think this is a pretty common issue, I know I’ve dealt with it before. I know a few guys with real Mugen sides whose cars have never been in accidents whose skirts scrape a little. Its just a necessary evil to have them mount that way. The easiest solution is to trim the sideskirts down until they clear, but I suppose you can try to do things with the door alignment if that doesn’t work.

Thanks for the reply, I’ve already grinded down the top lip, and I’m unsure if I want to grind anymore off just in case it’s gets too thin and is more susceptible to crack.
I’ll look into the door hinges and hopefully raise the door up slightly to compensate.
anyways, i also have the same issue and will be shaving down the piece so it clears. as for door hinge alignment, it is perfect on my car and it still scrapes a bit…
one question though. did everyone with these sideskirts have to drill holes in the body to mount it? or is there another solution? i dont want to drill holes in the body if i dont have too. i dont want to create rust problems in the future… thanks.:read:
if you clean the surface area really good of the body where the skirt would sit on top & on the underside of the sideskirts mounting area… then you can use wax & grease remover, clean it some more… then use 3M molding tape. they sell them in different widths, and also sell them at some auto parts stores. it’s a black colored tape, it has red plastic that you peel off to reveal the adhesive. and it’s really strong… used on emblems, door moldings & such at auto body shops…
like i said, they sell this stuff in different widths also… and can be trimmed using a razorblade & being very careful…
That 3M tape is awesome. I haven’t gotten the black stuff, but I’ve used the gray stuff you can buy at Home Depot. Works great for emblems.
I also saw some stock Acura moldings (brand new, at the dealer) and they already had the 3M tape applied. So it’s the same stuff auto manufacturers use from the factory (I forget if it was black or gray).
